WILL JOHNSON: I have been following the elections, upcoming on St. Maarten. From what I read recently of the 21.000 voters only 8000 are born Dutch and 13000 are naturalized Dutch immigrants. Some groups like the Dominicanos alone have 5000 voters.
An impossible situation for those who have one parent born on St.Maarten as they only amount to 5000 people. I will come back on that issue later on. I think that the UP will get 5 seats and the NA 4 seats and that they will form a government.
Real issues which are of grave concern to the future of the island are few. Language of instruction has been brought up by Mrs.Grisha Martin- Heyliger and a change to the constitution byRodolphe Samuel but what needs to be solved is the huge costs of government. This will not be solved by more taxes but by reducing salaries of members of parliament by as much as 50% and so on.
