After an explanation, Sint Maarten will again receive corona support from the Netherlands.
Sint-Maarten is again receiving financial support from the Netherlands to overcome the corona crisis. State Secretary Raymond Knops (Kingdom Relations) refused this at the end of last month because Sint Maarten had complained to the United Nations about alleged racism by the Netherlands.
The Parliament of Sint Maarten has once again confirmed in a letter that it accepts the conditions for the support package, Knops writes to the House. He can also live with the explanation given by parliament about the petition that has been submitted to the UN. According to Knops, the letter from parliament provides ‘sufficient clarification with regard to the necessary continuous support from the States of Sint Maarten’.
The petition to the UN states, among other things, that the conditions set for corona support are contrary to international human rights and are racist. Knops previously said he found the accusations of racism “nonsense” and “very painful”. According to him, the requirements of the aid package do not affect the autonomy of St. Maarten.
Sint Maarten must implement reforms in exchange for the support. Especially the establishment of an organization to implement the changes went wrong in St. Maarten. Now that Knops no longer sees any objections, approximately 18 million euros in corona support will be released for St. Maarten. Since 2010, Sint Maarten has been an autonomous country within the kingdom.
