LATEST: Tropical Storm Grace to pass 100 miles from Sint Maarten. Heavy Rainfall Expected. Country Under a Tropical Storm Warning
SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – At 5:00 PM (2100 UTC), the center of tropical storm Grace was located near latitude 15.9 North, longitude 60.7 West or about 220 miles east southeast of Sint Maarten, the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten said in its latest bulletin. The system is moving quickly toward the west near 26 mph (43 km/h). A motion toward the west-northwest with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next few days.
The center of tropical storm Grace has been located further south at 5 pm as a result, on this current forecast track, the system is now expected to pass approximately 100 miles south of Sint Maarten early Sunday morning.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected during the next day or two.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 35 (55 km) miles to the north of the center.
ARCHIVED – SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate on Saturday night as Tropical Storm Grace approaches Sint Maarten and the other Leeward Islands. On Friday evening Sint Maarten’s watch was upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning.
The Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS) said at 2.00pm Grace was located 310 miles east southeast of Sint Maarten. Grace is forecast to past 45 miles south of the country on Sunday morning.
MDS adds that the storm could produce heavy rainfall and winds up to 45 miles per hour with higher gusts from Saturday night into Sunday.
MDS: Residents in areas prone to flooding or near the coast should complete preparations to protect life and property.
