ARUBA REAFFIRMS BORDER CLOSURE WITH VENEZUELA
ORANJESTAD – Through a press release, on behalf of the Government of Aruba, the Prime Minister, Evelyn Wever Croes, informed that the border between Aruba and Venezuela will continue to be closed “for the time being”.
In the official letter Wever Croes explained that from Aruba the situation of Venezuela is followed “very closely”; situation that qualifies as “difficult”, mentioning that since 2015,
4.5 million inhabitants have “left” the country.
Since February, and by a unilateral decision of the Venezuelan Government, air and sea traffic between Venezuela and the Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao islands is closed. During the month of May the Venezuelan Government announced that it was lifting the measure only for the island of Aruba, but from the Dutch Government it was decided to maintain the border closure between Venezuela and the three islands.
The Prime Minister also stressed that the crisis in Venezuela is “immense” and the impact for nearby countries is “very serious”, so the continuity of border closure is justified.
