CALCA To Meet In St Maarten Caribbean Academy Law And Court
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Oct 10, CMC – The fourth biennial conference of the Caribbean Academy for Law and Court Administration (CALCA) gets underway in the Dutch-Caribbean island of St. Maarten later this month.
The October 27-29 conference, which is being held under the theme “‘Law at the Cross-roads: Reappraising the Role of Common Law and Civil Law Practitioners in Transnational Development’ is being organised in partnership with the General Legal Council of Jamaica, the St. Maarten Bar Association and the Organization for Harmonization of Business Law in the Caribbean (OHADAC).
calcaCALCA is the educational arm of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and has as its main objectives the advancement of knowledge, training and research in the practical application of law, especially international law, and of the administration of justice in the Caribbean context.
The conference will bring together legal practitioners and other professionals from the common law and civil law jurisdictions to discuss current, cutting edge legal issues.

The CCJ said that the conference has attracted attendees and speakers from the Dutch, English, Spanish and French-speaking Caribbean and that the “discussions will take the form of both plenary and concurrent breakout sessions which will be facilitated by renowned and respected jurists from the region and beyond.
“This conference will offer a unique and intellectually engaging experience with over 25 interactive sessions, daily networking breaks and a major networking cocktail event to an anticipated audience of over 200 attendees from the Caribbean and other parts of the world.”
CALCA chairman, Justice Winston Anderson, who is also a CCCJ judge, said “the 2016 CALCA conference is fast becoming one of the most-anticipated events for Caribbean professionals in the legal field.
“This year, because of the focus on transnational issues, practitioners of accounting, finance, trade and development, as well as, government officials, corporate executives, representatives from multinational agencies and regulators should find the conference of distinct value.

The conference is being sponsored by the” Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), Windward Islands Bank and Caribbean Airlines.
The conference will also have a number of exhibitors including publisher Thomson Reuters, law firm Sidley Austin LLP, OHADAC and the CCJ.
