WILLEMSTAD–Six former prime ministers of the Netherlands Antilles have written a joint letter to the Kingdom Government to express concern over the attitude of the Netherlands within the Kingdom Council of Ministers.
The ex-heads of Antillean governments are worried about the way Dutch Cabinet members push through instructions to get their way despite the objections of other Kingdom partners. It regards not just the latest order to the Governor of St. Maarten, but also an earlier one to the Governor of Aruba.
Maria Liberia-Peters, Emily de Jongh-Elhage, Suzanne “Suzy” Römer, Mirna Godett, Etienne Ys and Don Martina signed the letter. It has not been sent to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in his capacity as chair of the Kingdom Council yet, because the authors first wanted to inform the countries involved of the content, stated De Jongh-Elhage.
Liberia-Peters said they had no desire to become involved in island politics, but want to safeguard the correct application of rules and regulations, including the Constitutions in question and the Kingdom Charter.
