PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – The St. Maarten Fire Department was called out on Friday night into Saturday morning to carry out a number of weather related rescues.
A senior member of the department told our news room that all of the islands low lying areas are flooded.
They conducted a house rescue of a man and his grandson in Cole Bay. A pregnant woman and her children was also rescued from three to four feet of water in her home also in the district of Cole Bay.
The rescued lady was turned over to the Ambulance Department.
The fire officer also told us that in the vicinity of the cargo building on the airport road it is almost impossible for vehicles to pass to the flooding in the area.
It is impossible for vehicles to pass in the area of Mullet Bay going to Cupecoy. The department also assisted several people who were stuck in that area.
The St. Maarten Fire Department also conducted rescue operations on the Bush Road where a female driver ran off the road and fell into a ditch.
The department of VROMI have been able to assist with the outflow of water to the ocean by opening the mouth of the channel next to the Great Bay Hotel.
They have also been many reports of boulders rolling out of the hills causing the police to block a number of roads while the boulders were removed by VROMI.
Residents who have no reason to be on the public roads are being requested to stay at home as the rain is expected to continue into Saturday afternoon.
This website have also received information from the area of Grand Case stating that that area too suffered extensive flooding over night. French Quarter is also said to be badly affected.
To top it all off, at quarter to nine Saturday morning the Fire Department was called out for a fire some where in the vicinity of Saphire.
As soon as more information becomes available it will be released.
