The Dutch government has proposed an integrity committee for St. Maarten.
The government established a commission of inquiry into the many violations of integrity on St. Maarten.
The committee can pass the results of its investigations on to the Public Prosecutor Office for possible prosecution.
Minister Plasterk points to research showing that there is widespread abuse of power, conflicts of interest and corruption, including corruption in the political governance on Saint Martin.
He finds that unacceptable within the Kingdom.
The Dutch government hopes that the persons in charge in Sint Maarten approve establishment of the new commission.
If they do not accept it, then the commission will simply be imposed.
Plasterk incidentally, is said to have a favorable impression of the new prime minister Marcel Gumbs.
Het kabinet stelt een commissie in die onderzoek doet naar de vele schendingen van integriteit op Sint-Maarten. De commissie kan het resultaat van de onderzoeken doorgeven aan het Openbaar Ministerie voor eventuele strafvervolging.
Minister Plasterk wijst op onderzoek waaruit blijkt dat op Sint-Maarten op grote schaal machtsmisbruik, belangenverstrengeling en corruptie voorkomen, ook bij het politiek bestuur. Hij vindt dat onacceptabel binnen het Koninkrijk.
Het kabinet hoopt dat de bestuurders op Sint-Maarten met instelling van de commissie instemmen. Doen ze dat niet, dan wordt de commissie opgelegd. Plasterk zegt overigens een goede indruk te hebben van de nieuwe premier Gumbs.
