LATEST: No agreement yet on aid to Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. There is no agreement between the Netherlands and Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten about new aid to the Caribbean countries because of the corona crisis, but the consultations will continue later. This morning there was another Kingdom Council of Ministers. The Prime Ministers of the Caribbean countries were also there. Prime Minister Rhuggenaath of Curaçao said that the three countries more or less agree on the reforms demanded by the Netherlands, but not on form. Among other things, they criticize the authority that the Netherlands wants to establish that manages the money. According to Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, it is getting too much power.
Rhuggenaath spoke of good consultation. Some of the reforms also require changes to the law, and Prime Ministers have said they have more time to study those changes. “There have been no negotiations about that Kingdom Act and there is no consensus about it. But we are constructive.”
Representatives of the three countries have already been very critical in recent days about the conditions that the Netherlands sets for more aid. They said they would like to reform, but not at the pace that the Netherlands demands.
