Earthquake off Terre de Bas in Saintes
The earth shook at 12:51 a.m., in Guadeloupe, this Friday, March 26. An earthquake of magnitude 6 according to the first elements.
The tremor lasted only a few seconds but the earthquake that shook the archipelago seemed to last forever for some. If a good number of Guadeloupeans did not feel anything, others were awakened by this shock in the middle of the night.
According to the volcanological and seismological observatory of Guadeloupe, this strong earthquake of magnitude 6, felt at 00:51, was identified of the tectonic type. Information also given by other research centers, that of the University of West Indies or the “US Geological Survey”, which speak of a magnitude between 5.8 and 6 on the Richter scale.
Its epicenter was located 64 kilometers northeast of Désirade, 101 kilometers from Pointe-à-Pitre, 130 kilometers from Saint John’s in Antigue and 171 kilometers from Roseau, Dominica, at a depth of 18 kilometers.
