Member of Parliament Paul Rosenmöller of GroenLinks yesterday submitted a motion for a higher priority for Kingdom relations in the new cabinet. By intensifying Dutch efforts in the field of security and socio-economic matters, he wants to improve relations with the islands in a concrete and sustainable way. He announced this yesterday during a policy debate in the Senate.
The Senate held a debate yesterday with outgoing State Secretary Raymond Knops of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The debate was about relations with the countries and municipalities in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
According to Rosenmöller, the reason was that the State Secretary also used the words “together” and “constructive forces”. “How you ultimately manage to use it for an improved relationship is a field of tension and a challenge for all of us,” said the GroenLinks senator.
The motion mentions the report of the National Ombudsman in which he states that the Caribbean Netherlands is not a far-from-my-bed-show can and may stay for The Hague. In addition, the motion mentions the Advisory Council on International Affairs and the Council of State as supporters of improving Kingdom relations.
Rosenmöller is of the opinion that in the broad field of security, as well as in the socio-economic and financial field, the population in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom benefits from intensifying mutual relations.
That is why the motion states that the new cabinet should give higher priority to Kingdom relations by intensifying Dutch efforts in the aforementioned areas in order to strengthen the ties concretely and sustainably.
