SJIS Celebrated 20 years of service to the community of St. Maarten on July 4, 2022
— Contributing towards a safer community –
Established on July 4, 2002, the Foundation Judicial Institutes St. Maarten (SJIS) celebrated its 20 Anniversary of dedicated service towards the community of St. Maarten on July 4, 2022. The celebrations kicked off with a well-timed Wellness Retreat for the staff of SJIS. SJIS will be releasing a series of animation videos that explain the core tasks of SJIS and will be sharing with the community an overview of the achievements of SJIS to conclude its celebrations.
SJIS consists of the Adult Parole and Probation Department, the Family Guardianship Department, the Foster Family Central Section and the recently established Youth Foster Home.
Our core tasks are advising judicial authorities, execution of probation and parole supervision, community service, behavioral intervention training, execution of child protective measure and foster care service. The operational costs of SJIS are largely subsidized by the Ministry of Justice. SJIS also receives funding through grant writing for activities that target adults suspected or convicted of a crime and children placed under projective measure, which include children in foster care.
SJIS is committed to improving its services to our community as we acknowledge our anniversaries. We are hopeful and confident that progress will be achieved, despite the limited manpower and resources. The commitment and resiliency of our probation and parole officers and our child protection workers have been tested. The scheduled wellness retreat is to confidently step into the next decade as an evolving organization with a greater compassion towards the overall wellness of our staff that looks forward to providing a broader scope of services to the community of St. Maarten.
