Daniel Gibbs: It is with great emotion that I learned of the death of Lyonel AGNES, Saint-Martinois at heart and by adoption, who left us without warning on the night of July 23 at the age of 41.

Lyonel was a basketball enthusiast, very involved with young people, particularly within the Association de Basket de Saint-Martin, in which he worked as director, alongside his companion Laïla, president of the association of then, after a move to a high level in this sport in mainland France.
I had the opportunity to accompany him as a deputy in his vision of the development of his sport in Saint-Martin. A vision that he wanted to be both sporty, of course, but also educational and open to the world. It is in this sense that he organized basketball camps every year with coaches from mainland France but also from the United States, to the delight of young people from Saint-Martin and elsewhere, aged 10 to 17. .

Lyonel was also a specialized educator, a position he held for 4 years in the social service of the Collectivity.
Unfortunately the arrival of Irma has, as for many Saint-Martin residents, upset all her plans. After having actively participated in the first post-cyclonic food distributions, Lyonel and his partner had to make the difficult decision to go into exile in the Dijon region of France, where they got married and had the happiness of having their first child last April. They also had the chance to resume their activities successfully.
It is therefore at the door of a couple in the prime of life and fulfilled, each in their own field, that death has struck.
On behalf of the Union for Democracy and on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, to all relatives and relatives of Lyonel.
I have a very special thought for Laïla Freedom-Agnès in this particularly difficult new ordeal.
We wish you strength and courage as you try to overcome these painful times.

Daniel Gibbs: C’est avec grande émotion que j’ai appris le décès de Lyonel AGNES, saint-martinois de cœur et d’adoption qui nous a quitté sans crier garde dans la nuit du 23 juillet à 41 ans.
Lyonel était un passionné de basket, très investi auprès des jeunes notamment au sein de l’Association de Basket de Saint-Martin, dans lequel il a oeuvré en tant que directeur, aux côtés de sa compagne Laïla, présidente de l’association d’alors, après un passage à un haut niveau dans ce sport en métropole.
J’ai eu l’occasion de l’accompagner en tant que député dans sa vision du développement de son sport à Saint-Martin. Une vision qu’il voulait à la fois sportive, cela va de soit, mais aussi éducative et ouverte sur le monde. C’est dans ce sens qu’il organisait tous les ans Les camps du basket avec des entraîneurs venus de métropole mais aussi des États-Unis, pour le grand bonheur des jeunes de Saint-Martin et d’ailleurs, âgé de 10 à 17.
Il initiait également les tout-petits au Baby Basket sur le plateau sportif de Grand-Case.
Lyonel a également été éducateur spécialisé, poste qu’il a occupé pendant 4 ans au service social de la Collectivité.
Malheureusement l’arrivée d’Irma a, comme pour de nombreux saint-martinois, bouleversé tous ses projets. Après avoir activement participé aux premières distributions de vivres post-cycloniques, Lyonel et sa compagne ont dû prendre la difficile décision de s’exiler dans la région de Dijon en France, où ils se sont mariés et ont eu le bonheur d’avoir leur premier enfant en avril dernier. Ils ont aussi eu la chance de reprendre leurs activités avec succès.
C’est donc à la porte d’un couple dans la fleur de l’âge et épanoui, chacun dans son domaine, que la mort a frappé.
Au nom de l’Union pour la Démocratie et en mon nom propre, j’adresse mes condoléances attristées à la famille, à tous les parents et proches de Lyonel.
J’ai une pensée toute particulière pour Laïla Freedom-Agnès dans cette nouvelle épreuve particulièrement difficile.
Nos vœux de force et courage vous accompagnent alors que vous tentez de surmonter ces moments douloureux.
