Dear Sint Maarten 🇸🇽
This entire de-colonization procedure (independence) that the 12 MPs and some citizens are rooting for has left me lost for words, especially the petition to the UN. As a legal expert, it’s simply mind boggling.
Before I provide solutions/answers of my own and those I’ve discussed with some close wisdom partners, I would like to ask the public a few questions.
- Would you like to have a SXM passport?
This will enable you to enjoy the process of Visa applications for most places in the world. Long waiting times, costly fees, many documents, and possibly being declined even if you’re going abroad to attend a funeral of a family member. If you cannot prove strong ties to sxm, unfortunately, you may not be allowed to enter the country of your choosing. (This is jus an example of what a small island, new country status passport will grant you)
Who will make new immigration /visitor deals with over 100 countries in the world? 🤔 Will we have our own embassies set up? We won’t be able to run to the Dutch embassy if ever in trouble abroad.

. - How would you like to handle a natural disaster?
(A) KPSM do all the rescuing, military work, humanitarian work, etc?
(B) beg China/ USA/ France/ anyone for financial help and military/humanitarian assistance?
(C) Form our own military overnight?
(D) Don’t know, who cares?

. - How would you like SXM to pay back 1.2 Billion in debt and replenish the coffers to the point that there is a healthy reserve?
Oh, you actually believe sxm will receive that much in reparations or you think it will be forgiven after telling the Dutch that we are ungrateful and they are racist? 🙃

. - Do you strongly believe that we can run our entire economy on tourism alone? Or what overnight ideas do you have that we can use to create a multi-pillar economy?

. - Who is gonna start and qualify an official central bank for sxm only?

. - How will we be seen on the international stage with the world bank, WTO, IMF, FATF, UN, etc etc etc? Who is qualified (and won’t embarass us) to handle foreign relations and represent us and speak at UN assemblies etc? What about our role in for example SIDS (small island developing states)?

. - Are you willing to give up the rest of the country to more foreign investors?

. - Are you willing to make sxm a tax haven and foot the bill for foreign investors, yourselves and visitors?

. - Where will our doctors study and train? Where will we get medical supplies from? Will there still be agreements to fly patients to NL, Colombia, and DR?

. - Where will our lawyers study and train? What bar exam will they sit? Who in sxm is qualified to that degree to set up such a system correctly? 🧐 What about judges and our Court system? Supreme Court? We can’t even get the small claims court up and running properly yet 🤷🏼♀️

. - Are we keeping the copied Dutch Laws and civil law system in place? Has this copied legal system matched the needs of our island specifically thus far?

. - Are you willing to start paying custom duty fees/taxes? Administrative/processing fees for shipments? 😏 oh you think we will be able to remain duty free and all? Remember how expensive it already is to order things due to high shipping costs.
(Check out the UK since they’ve left the EU, check out JA and T&T as examples before you answer this question) EVERYTHING will go up in price, remember we don’t produce anything 🤷🏼♀️

. - Do we have a strong infrastructure already? Telecommunications? Environmental protections? Sewage systems? Quality roads? High quality and environmentally conscious utilities? Proper street lights? Healthcare system? Honest and affordable Insurance system? Welfare/financial aid system? Etc.

. - Do we have a proper mental health system? Who are these psychologists and psychiatrists? Where do they come from and where do they train?

. - Are we gonna continue to teach Dutch at schools? We teach Spanish and French, can we add other languages? Is our school system ready for independence? Where will our students go for college? Who is paying for college? Do you have 50-150k lying around for each child? What about special ed?

The list of questions can go on and on and on…. but my last question is…
DO YOU SEE THE REALITY OF INDEPENDENCE? WOULD YOU STILL STAND BY THE 12 MPs PROUDLY?

These discussions will broaden our minds and collectively create a dialogue and a responsible way forward for sxm to become a #RealPlace one day through peaceful, honest and forward-thinking partnerships within the Kingdom. 😉
Bare in mind the difference between independence and freedom….independence is earned by becoming responsible and accountable for one’s own actions and duties. Freedom is a state of being, of which we are no where near at the moment, we only have a false sense of freedom from lack of structure, ordinance and rebellious behaviors. Our false sense of freedom is what has created our external chaos and inner turmoil. Independence will not give us freedom…. if we “free” ourselves from the kingdom, we will only imprison ourselves to our own past mistakes, lack of responsibility and failed accountability. A burden of pain I do not wish on my island 🥺❤️🇸🇽

Please sxm, do not allow this gang to bully you and umanipulate you in believing in something that will only benefit them as they continue to carry out inside dealings to fill their pockets and empty yours. ✊🏼
