Reducing illegal possession of (fire) arms is in the interest of everyone, in order to achieve this, in the period of October 21 to October 27 on Saba and Statia and October 28 to November 3 on Bonaire, there will be a turn-in campaign of (fire) weapons. The aim of the “Surrender and disarm” project is to remove as many fire and other weapons as possible from the streets and to emphasize the awareness of the danger of these weapons.
The (fire) weapons can be handed in between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) and on Bonaire also at the Public Prosecution Service (OM). The holder of a (illegal) firearm also has the option to have it collected by appointment with the KPCN. The identity of the person handing in the firearm will be registered. Firearms cannot be handed in anonymously. If after a shooting test it appears that there are no shooting incidents associated with a firearm, the possessor of the firearm will NOT be prosecuted.
If there is a link between the surrendered firearm and a shooting incident, the person who handed over the weapon will be heard as a suspect. Other weapons (such as striking, punching and stabbing weapons) CAN be returned anonymously.
During the hand-in campaign, young people from various schools will participate in a competition in which they show through photography how firearms influence society and hereby also their lives.

Actie “wapens weg” gaat van start
Het terugdringen van illegaal (vuur)wapenbezit is in het belang van een ieder. Om dit te kunnen bereiken zal gedurende de periode van 21 tot en met 27 oktober op Saba en Sint Eustatius en vanaf 28 oktober tot en met 3 november op Bonaire een inleveractie van (vuur)wapens beginnen. Het project “Wapens weg” heeft als doel om zoveel mogelijk vuur- en andersoortige wapens van straat te halen, en de bewustwording van het gevaar van wapens op straat te benadrukken.
Het inleveren van de (vuur)wapens kan geschieden tussen 08.00 en 20.00 uur bij het Korps Politie Caribisch Nederland (KPCN) en op Bonaire ook bij het kantoor van het Openbaar Ministerie (OM). De houder van een vuurwapen heeft ook de mogelijkheid om deze op afspraak af te laten halen door het KPCN. Van degene die het vuurwapen inlevert zal de identiteit worden vastgesteld. Vuurwapens kunnen niet anoniem worden ingeleverd. Indien na de schietproef blijkt dat er geen schietincidenten verbonden zijn aan het vuurwapen zal het voorhanden hebben van het vuurwapen NIET vervolgd worden.
Indien er wel een link bestaat tussen het ingeleverde vuurwapen en een schietincident zal degene die het wapen heeft overhandigd als verdachte gehoord worden. Overige wapens, (denk aan slag-, stoot- en steekwapens) kunnen WEL anoniem worden ingeleverd.
Tijdens de inleveractie zullen jongeren van diverse scholen deelnemen aan een prijsvraag waarbij zij doormiddel van fotografie laten zien hoe vuurwapens de samenleving en zo ook hun levens beïnvloed.
