At the suggestion of State Secretary Knops of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Dutch cabinet is allocating an additional 15.2 million euros for the food aid program in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The inhabitants of the three islands have faced major challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent loss of tourism. The poverty problem has increased sharply on the islands.

Cft: Political authorities in Philipsburg do not pay (pension) contributions

The debt position of the Country of Sint Maarten increased in the fourth quarter of 2020 by 61 million guilders to 1,232 million (over 1.2 billion). This brings the government debt ratio to 67 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
The debt of the Sint Maarten public sector is estimated at 936 million and the debt ratio of the public sector at 51 percent of GDP. The calculation of the debt ratios is based on a GDP of Sint Maarten – the total size of the economy – of 1,835 million (over 1.8 billion). That is far below the Netherlands, which is in fourth place, after the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The list is published every two years. The Hague Paul Comenencia, on behalf of Curaçao State Councilor of the Kingdom and former minister plenipotentiary of the Netherlands Antilles, would like to see the Association Antillean Network (VAN) spread its wings to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.
Comenencia argued for this today in his lecture on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the network organization.
