PRIME MINISTER JACOBS IS NOT PRO PETITION: Philipsburg Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs has confirmed by letter to State Secretary Knops (BZK) that her cabinet still fully supports the agreement reached in December on the establishment of a Caribbean Body for Reform and Development (COHO). This will direct the spending of Dutch loans and investments and supervise the implementation of far-reaching reforms to help Sint Maarten through the corona crisis.
With her letter, Jacobs complies with Knops’ demand: earlier this week, following the complaint submitted by a majority in the States to the UN against the Netherlands, Jacobs demanded a statement from the Sint Maarten government that it fully support the agreements with the Netherlands. state. Met haar brief voldoet Jacobs aan de eis van Knops: die had eerder deze week naar aanleiding van de klacht die een meerderheid in de Staten bij de VN tegen Nederland heeft ingediend een verklaring van de Sint Maartense regering geëist dat zij onverkort achter de afspraken met Nederland staat. De bewindsman verlangde uiterlijk 18 maart antwoord, niet alleen van de regering, maar ook van de Staten. In haar brief wijst Jacobs Knops erop dat de Staten vandaag (vrijdag) bijeenkomen en pas dan een standpunt kunnen innemen over diens eis. Knops laat er in zijn brief geen misverstand over bestaan de financiële hulp aan Sint Maarten te beëindigen als de Staten niet ondubbelzinnig hun steun herbevestigen aan het akkoord. Anders gezegd: zij zullen afstand moeten nemen van hun aanklacht tegen Nederland.

The States of the CAS countries can participate in the final debate in the House of Representatives via delegates and submit amendments and motions, but there is no voting.

Intussen heeft Knops met de premiers van Curaçao, Aruba en Sint Maarten gesproken over de voortgang van de rijkswet ter oprichting van het Caribische Orgaan voor Hervorming en Ontwikkeling. Het advies van de Raad van State zal eerst in de Rijksministerraad worden besproken waarna het wetsontwerp al dan niet aangepast ; ter behandeling aan de vier parlementen wordt aangeboden.
De Staten van de CAS-landen kunnen via gedelegeerden aan het finale debat in de Tweede Kamer deelnemen en amendementen en moties indienen, maar meestemmen is er niet bij.
