KNOPS’ LETTER TO P.M. JACOBS, AND SILVERIA’S REPONSE. ST MAARTEN GOVERNMENT IGNORES KNOPS’ DEADLINE: Dutch Sint Maarten Prime Minister, Silveria Jacobs Not Impressed With Knops’ Ultimatum.
Philipsburg – Sint Maarten is not impressed by the ultimatum issued by State Secretary Knops (BZK). He wanted a written confirmation by March 18 that the parliamentarians still support the agreement on the conditions that the Netherlands attaches to the continuation of the corona support.
With his demand, Knops responded to the indictment that a majority of the States have submitted to the UN because they believe that the actions of the Netherlands are colonial and racist. The minister has informed Prime Minister Jacobs that he will suspend liquidity support if there is no certainty that the government and parliament will fully support the agreement concluded in December.
Jacobs responded immediately, but because her answer can be interpreted in various ways, it is still unclear whether Knops is sufficiently reassured. Parliament has ignored his deadline. In a debate with the prime minister on Friday, they made it clear that it is not the Dutch minister, but they themselves that are about their agenda.
In the meantime, Knops has spoken with the prime ministers of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten about the progress of the Kingdom Act establishing the Caribbean Body for Reform and Development. The advice of the Council of State will first be discussed in the Council of Ministers, after which the bill may or may not be amended; is presented to the four parliaments for consideration.
The States of the CAS countries can participate in the final debate in the House of Representatives via delegates and submit amendments and motions, but there is no voting.
Silveria Jacobs Not Impressed Not Impressed With Knops’ Ultimatum.
Philipsburg De Staten van Sint Maarten zijn niet onder de indruk van het ultimatum dat staatssecretaris Knops (BZK) heeft gesteld. Die wilde uiterlijk 18 maart een schriftelijke bevestiging dat de parlementariërs nog altijd achter het akkoord staan over de voorwaarden die Nederland verbindt aan voortzetting van de coronasteun.
Met zijn eis reageerde Knops op de aanklacht die een meerderheid van de Staten bij de VN heeft ingediend omdat zij vinden dat de handelwijze van Nederland koloniaal en racistisch is. De bewindsman heeft minister-president Jacobs laten weten de liquiditeitssteun op te schorten als er geen zekerheid over bestaat dat regering en parlement onverkort achter het in december gesloten akkoord staan.
Jacobs heeft per omgaande gereageerd, maar omdat haar antwoord op verschillende manieren kan worden uitgelegd staa, is nog onduidelijk of Knops voldoende gerustgesteld is. De Staten hebben zijn deadline genegeerd. In een debat met de premier maakten zij vrijdag duidelijk dat niet de Nederlandse bewindspersoon, maar zijzelf over hun agenda gaan.
Intussen heeft Knops met de premiers van Curaçao, Aruba en Sint Maarten gesproken over de voortgang van de rijkswet ter oprichting van het Caribische Orgaan voor Hervorming en Ontwikkeling. Het advies van de Raad van State zal eerst in de Rijksministerraad worden besproken waarna het wetsontwerp al dan niet aangepast ; ter behandeling aan de vier parlementen wordt aangeboden.
