JOHNSON SIGNS DESTINATION MARKETING MOU WITH SABA

PHILIPSBURG-The Honourable Stuart Johnson, Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport & Telecommunications (TEATT) has finalized months of discussions with the island of Saba and recently signed an MOU with the neighbouring island on co-operate and collaborate in fostering a closer working relationship in the tourism development and promotion of the islands of Sint Maarten and Saba.

The MOU, signed by Minister Johnson representing the Council of Ministers and Government of St. Maarten and Saba Commissioner Bruce Zagers representing the Saba Tourism Bureau, states that both parties agree to “co-operate in participating together at Marketing and Sales promotions in markets agreed on. Parties will also co-operate at travel shows mutually agreed upon.”

The MOU was signed on Saba Monday, October 7th, 2019, following the approval given by the Council of Ministers on Friday, October 4th, 2019 to Johnson.

Johnson first sought and received the mandate from The Council of Ministers before entering the agreement, which had no financial commitments by either party upon signing. Johnson said any joint financial agreements that may follow would have to be first decided upon and agreed to separately.

Based on the MOU St. Maarten and Saba will collaborate towards seeking financing or grants for specific tourism development projects from regional and international institutions which are an added benefit for the islands where possible.

Johnson said the MOU “signifies the commitment I have made from the start of my tenure as Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs, which is the rebuilding of our economy and sustainably redeveloping our Tourism Product. The fact is that when you travel to St. Maarten, there are opportunities to hop over to our neighbouring islands, and we are a more sellable destination when we promote these options jointly.”

He said, “Travellers today are looking for destinations that have interactive and Eco-Friendly activities. We are already unique and unique things in particular, and we are already two countries in one with French St. Martin and Dutch St. Maarten and what better way to expand on our uniqueness than showing the benefit of visiting three or four different destinations within minutes giving the vacationer more value for their dollar.”

Similar to the MOU with French St. Martin, which involves a joint approach to destination marketing, the Saba/St Maarten joint venture program will result in a pooling of resources to maximize the effectiveness of marketing at tradeshows and other promotions.

Other areas where the two islands will combine their resources include data collection, strategic planning press and family trips and training in hospitality. The MOU is valid for an indefinite period with the option of revision where necessary and does not restrict the individual product development and marketing efforts of either party.

The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations must strengthen the coordinating task

THE HAGUE – The policymakers in The Hague have too little regard and respect for the differences between the Caribbean and European parts of the Netherlands.

Moreover, there is not enough coordination between the various ministries, which does not produce clear policies for the ministry. These are some of the conclusions in the report of the Interdepartmental Policy Study on Kingdom Relations (IBO). The coordinating task of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is not well reflected.

The role of the ministry is not clear, according to the IBO, while it was already concluded in 2013 that that role should be strengthened.

Swiss banking secrecy unravels one year after it officially ended

One year ago, the Federal Tax Administration (FTA), the Swiss tax agency, officially started exchanging bank account data with tax authorities in other countries for the first time.
Twelve months on and Switzerland has shared financial account information with a further 63 partner countries, the FTA said on Monday.

Among these countries are a number of Caribbean states, including Barbados, Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis. Following the UK and US, the Caribbean has the largest amount of foreign funds parked with Swiss banks.

Other countries where data was exchanged under the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) include India. It is estimated by the Swiss National Bank that India deposits account for 0.07% of the total aggregate foreign client funds held with Switzerland-based banks.

However, the largest exchange was with Germany, the FTA said, though it was not able to disclose information on the size of financial assets.

The exchanged information includes identification data, account and financial information, as well as information concerning the financial institution, account balance and capital. The FTA received this information from 7,500 Swiss financial institutions (banks, trusts, insurers, etc.).

Overall, the FTA sent information on around 3.1 million financial accounts and received information on around 2.4 million.

Recipient countries will soon be sifting through the data to verify whether their taxpayers have correctly declared financial accounts abroad in their tax returns. This data can help build prosecution cases where they have failed to do so.

However, the FTA said that it had suspended the information exchange with Bulgaria following a leak of four million Bulgarian and foreign taxpayers’ financial account details.

The Bulgarian National Revenue Agency was hacked in July, prompting the suspension. “Individuals with tax residence in Switzerland holding financial accounts in Bulgaria and individuals with tax residence in Bulgaria with financial accounts in Switzerland were affected by the disruption,” the FTA said in a statement.

A further 12 countries sent Switzerland information, while it withheld account data as “those countries do not yet meet the international requirements on confidentiality and data security…or because they chose not to receive data”, the FTA said.

These countries included Belize, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Curaçao, Montserrat, Romania, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Cyprus, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands.

The data exchanges take place nine months after the start of the year, meaning the next exchange takes place in September 2020. This will include data exchanges with around 90 countries, including Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Oman and Turkey.

Three dead in Dutch Listeria outbreak

Folded slices of honey ham

Dutch authorities have linked three deaths because of Listeria to meat products from one company.

Of 20 patients with listeriosis, officials reported it was almost certain that they had been infected via meat products from a company called Offerman in the past two years. One woman also had a miscarriage.

The source of infections was traced by the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) and NVWA (Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority).

RIVM found a certain type of Listeria in several patients. The agency then contacted the NVWA to compare this with DNA data from food and company sampling. After a match was found for a sample, follow-up work was started by the NVWA.

A total of 80 patients with Listeria infection are reported to RIVM every year.

Production halted due to Listeria
Vleeswarensnijderij Offerman stopped production of meat items at the Aalsmeer location from yesterday (October 3).

NVWA instructed the company to take action because recent sampling found there was a Listeria problem at the company.

Offerman may only resume production after the site has been thoroughly cleaned and it is given approval to do so from the NVWA. A company statement said that cutting and packaging of the meat products in question will be taken over by other factories that are part of the group.

Offerman’s customers include Aldi, Bidfood, Jumbo, Sligro and Versunie. More than 100 products were affected in the Jumbo and Sligro recalls and over 50 in the Versunie withdrawal.

November best before dates

Jumbo’s safety warning included various sliced pre-packaged meats. The supermarket was informed by Offerman, one of its meat suppliers, that the production site for these items may be contaminated with Listeria.

It asked customers not to eat the products, some of which have best before dates in late November, and to bring them back to one of its stores. Follow this link for a list of affected items.

Meat products still on the shelves are safe to consume and Jumbo hopes to have the full range available again soon.

Elderly and immunocompromised people, expectant mothers and newborn babies have an increased risk of contracting listeriosis.

Symptoms of infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. The time between becoming infected and developing symptoms varies from a few to 70 days with an average of three weeks.
