Dutch airline KLM has issued a warning after it came out that meat products contaminated with Listeria may have been served on some of its flights.
The RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) and NVWA (Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) are investigating a Listeria outbreak linked to cold meat from a company called Offerman. The firm stopped production of meat items at its Aalsmeer locationthis past week.
Twenty patients have been reported over two years with three associated deaths and one woman having a miscarriage. A total of 80 patients with Listeria infection are reported to RIVM every year.
KLM traceability continues
KLM said it was informed by a meat supplier that one of their production sites might have been infected with Listeria. The contaminated products may have been served for breakfast in Business Class.
A KLM spokesman toldFood Safety Newsthat KLM Catering is investigating to determine the exact products and flights that were at risk.
“We hope to have more detailed information very soon. KLM proactively notified all passengers that can possibly be considered at risk based on the current information as provided by our suppliers.”
A KLM statement urged people to consult a general practitioner if they had any questions about their health or a potential infection.
“We apologize for the fact you might have been confronted with this and we hereby confirm that we’ve immediately stopped supplying our aircraft with these meat products. All currently served meals on board are completely safe to consume.”
Earlier this year, Air France took action in a different incident afterListeria was detected in a sandwich. Servair, supplier of the airline’s on-board catering service, reported Listeria was found in a tuna sandwich available from self-service on board buffets.
The sandwich was served in the economy and premium economy cabins of nine long-haul flights departing Paris Orly and Paris Charles de Gaulle between May 21 and 24, 2019. Servair withdrew all products from Air Food, the provider, on Air France flights.
Expanded Dutch recall
The foodborne outbreak in the Netherlands is caused by Listeria monocytogenes in cold meat such as charcuterie in sliced and pre-packed form.
Offerman’s customers in the Netherlands include Aldi, Bidfood, Jumbo, Sligro and Versunie. More than 100 products were affected in the Jumbo and Sligro recalls.
The Freshly, Kraak-Vers, Anur, Wahid and FairBeleg brands are also under recall. All meat products with the codes NL 429 EC and NL 214850 EC are implicated. For affected product names, codes and datesfollow this linkand open the PDF.
Offerman is a subsidiary of the company, Ter Beke, which issued a statement about the incident saying attention is primarily focused on organizing the recall of relevant products from the market, in collaboration with the NVWA and customers.
“This precautionary measure, which we deliberately rolled out very broadly, is implemented as quickly and efficiently as possible and in accordance with all established rules and procedures.”
Ter Beke representatives said they were “shocked” by the finding that the same Listeria strain was found in people in the Netherlands and the Offerman site in Aalsmeer.
“We have no further information on the allegation that this would indicate a causal relationship between the two. Offerman is in contact with the relevant authorities and we cooperate with all further investigations.”
A statement from the Dutch Retail Organization (CBL) said involved members took precautions by removing products from shelves and calling on consumers not to eat them and to return items.
The group said there was a need to share information between government and business as quickly as possible, adding it wanted to talk to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and the NVWA about adequately sharing information with the supply chain.
Other affected countries
Product recall by Aldi
Distribution includes Aruba, Belgium, Curaçao, Germany, Luxembourg, Sint Maarten, Spain, Suriname, and the United Kingdom according to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
A statement from the Luxembourg government confirmed some products from Offerman were distributed in the country.
Aldi Luxembourg recalled all dates of Rosbif cuit 100-gram of the brand Délifin up to and including Oct. 13, 2019. While the product has been removed from stores some of it has been sold.
One of the products recalled by Albert Heijn
Authorities in Luxembourg said given the scale of measures taken in the Netherlands, additional withdrawals cannot be excluded but there have been no connected infections reported as yet in the country.
In Belgium, « Rôti de bœuf » of the brand Délifin with the same dates as in Luxembourg was recalled from Aldi stories. Supermarket Albert Heijn also withdrew Wahid brand charcuterie due to potential Listeria.
Belgian officials initially reported they had not been officially informed by NVWA so contacted Dutch authorities via the RASFF system and urged them to provide information on the situation including any additional deliveries to the country. In an updated statement, Belgian officials said further traceability information had been provided by Dutch authorities and more recalls were possible.
According to Sciensano (Belgian Institute for Health), there are about 75 listeriosis infections in Belgium each year.
Questions have been raised about the proposed facility that will convert plastics shipped in from Europe into liquid fuel. It’s since been learned that the company was behind similar facilities in Ireland, Scotland and Las Vegas that either never got started, or were rejected.
That’s created cause for some concern in this province, with the NDP seeking answers and urging due diligence.
Keith Hulbert is the CEO of Synergy World Power. He told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that plastics from Europe are commonly exported to countries like China and Indonesia, and often burned in crude ways to produce electricity.
He says plastics are much more valuable for conversion into a diesel or gasoline-type product with a much lower sulfur content. That, he says, is better for the environment.
The town of Lewisporte is awaiting the results of the provincial environmental assessment process.
EnviroPower, a company linked to Synergy World Power, proposed a waste-to-energy plant on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten last year, based on a 30 year power purchase agreement with the island nation’s power utility.
Synergy World Power was previously registered in the UK, but applied to be struck from the register of companies and dissolved in June after being dormant for some time.
On Monday September 30 after several meetings, discussions held with His Excellency Governor Eugene Holiday and the new coalition, MP Silveria Jacobs, leader of the National Alliance and largest party in Parliament and in the coalition of 9, humbly accepted to carry the role and responsibility to form the next interim government of St. Maarten.
The formation agreement was thoroughly discussed and encompasses points that this coalition deems necessary to be able to move St. Maarten forward.
Contrary to the political rhetoric being touted by the former Chairlady, she has had ample time to put forward legislation, proposals and motions related to electoral reform, which has not been done. Four years as Prime Minister and another 4 as Chair of Parliament and has achieved what in regards to Electoral Reform?
When the public hears the words coming out of the mouth of the good lady, they should remember and take into account the following:
MP Wescot-Williams was Commissioner of Constitutional Affairs from 2000 – 2009 and simply couldn’t realize St. Maarten leaving the Netherlands Antilles. In June 2009, William Marlin was appointed Constitutional Affairs Commissioner and went into action mode and promised separate status for St. Maarten by October 10, 2010 and we can all recall her immediate reaction; that was unattainable, she said.
Also, as a matter of fact, MP Wescott Williams is historically the longest serving PM since 10.10.10 in charge of Constitutional Affairs and has never tackled any of the issues related to the discrepancies between the Constitution, the Electoral Ordinance and the registration of politcal parties or brought forward any changes to create true electoral reform. One should ask how many times the party she supports has benefited from these discrepancies and the numerous changes in government over the years.
Recently in her 4 plus years as Chair of Parliament, and recently as Chair of the Adhoc committee for electoral reform, she has not tackled this situation, and has held not one meeting, but can boldly state on October 3rd that there are 3 pieces of legislation related to electoral reform, which the secretariat must make available to us … however during her tenure…. nada!!!
As a result of the year and a half long infighting in the former coalition confirmed by the members of the UD/SMCP coalition, the current demissionaire government lost its majority support in Parliament. The heir apparent leader of the UD, since the suspension of MP Heyliger, former Chairlady Wescott Williams was unable to keep her government and majority in Parliament in sync. This is the failure or short coming of the aforementioned Member of Parliament and not the current leader of the new coalition leader in Parliament, the undersigned MP Silveria Jacobs.
As a first time formateur, I have taken up the challenge to form the next interim government given the conditions and concerns as laid down in the formation document. As the 9 now forming a majority, we stepped up after it was apparent that no reconciliation could be brokered by the 6-1 and 1 which now made up the reality of the former coalition, a truly fragmented group of individuals without a clear leader.
The 9 had hoped by salvaging this floundering Parliament and it’s minority we could have avoided a political and constitutional crisis allowing for effective day to day governing. This because the current caretaker government clearly had no true direction, leadership or collaboration to get needed legislation and strong decisions that weren’t apparently directed by “outside influences” executed. As elected representatives of the people we brought awareness of serious ills as well as solutions from the opposition benches and are therefore ready and willing to bring these forward as we form the interim government now, and cemented with the public’s support on January 9th, will remain in government for the next 4 years.
The proven stability of the National Alliance party over the years, the recognition of new leadership, innovative and progressive young candidates, especially in the last election, is all that is needed to remind persons who are swayed by the rhetoric of the former chair.
“In cooperation with our partners in the new coalition in Parliament and the incoming interim government, I pledge to do my utmost to continue to lead and function with the utmost integrity and passion; to do what is right for St. Maarten and her people.
Due to the unnecessary move by the outgoing PM to call for elections, we have a short time to do so, but I have no doubt that we can achieve what we set out to, without fear, without feeling the obvious intimidation that is being proliferated by those who have connived to get us exactly where we are today. In the end, it is the people who will decide St. Maarten’s fate,” MP Jacobs stated.
André Bosman is angry with St Maarten because the government cannot get its act together. Aruba is swimming in debt, Curacao slapping up Venezuelans and giving Holland a bad name in European High Court.
In other words…
The usual.
These animations are tests. They will be ready by elections.
I am trying out various formats. I am getting authentic Dutch voice overs for the Makambas, and we got nuff yu-Curacao to help with the voice overs too😊
