Party For Progress: Nepotism in St Maarten. Generational incompetence and corruption in our Government

Who remembers that old drunken snake, Marcel Gumbs? Marcel Gumbs is our bloated corpse of an ex Prime Minister who had to be dragged kicking and screaming from office.

At the time, Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs, affectionately known as ‘The Suicidal Lunatic’ was advocating death to bloggers and encouraging anyone who criticized his putrid government to just “Kill themselves!”

Marcel Gumbs in his drunken rants as Prime Minister embarrassed himself and St Maarten internationally. The World was expecting the Prime Minister of St Maarten to be dignified and respectable, not some half dead lush Sarah dragged in to prop up government.

Marcel Gumbs, the pompous and rapidly aging politico then ran to the French Side to find work after he spent his tenure tarnishing his own reputation trying to attack BORN Dutch St Maarteners rather than concerning himself with the country he was born… FRENCH ST MARTIN.

No surprised to see the old vampire wrapped in the cloak of a new party.

All vampires need new faces and new blood so that they can pretend to be something different, so that they can pretend that they are the new face of change. They prop up their sprogs who have done NOTHING for St Maarten and call them party leader.

Then they nominate fresh faces to be destroyed as the mudfest begins.

Marcel Gumbs is a French ditchpig that was buried by the words from his own mouth and Blackened heart back in 2015.

Just like satanic Leroy de Weever started propping up his high-assed Tan-Tan niece Cornelius when he started catching karma…That bloated, drunken, decomposing old Bullfrog Marcel this elections, will be trying the same.

Old plantation mentality.

With New faces – don’t fall for it!

No disrespect to Marvio, Petrona and the Newbies, anything from Marcel’s quarters is corrupt and has a stench.

When government fell last week, was MS. Gumbs busy behind the scenes networking and establishing contacts for her new party? NOPE! As soon as government fell, I was forwarded the sales pitch from MR Gumbs..MARCEL!

The same corrupt, oldheads from back in the day that has St Maarten in a sewer right now, are propping up these so called ‘new’ politicians, their hand up their puppet asses, manipulating every word and move they make.

NOTE: As you can see, since my surgery, I’m a much kinder, gentler soul.

Monaco19: Captains seek services, consistency in St. Maarten

Capt. Trevor Weaver of M/Y Sirona III started small on his wish list when asked what he and his crew look for during visits to St. Maarten.

“Consistency,” Capt. Weaver said. When crew are off duty and head for a burger or a workout at the gym, they often find a business closed, he said.

“These are small, but crew need activities close by,” Capt. Weaver said. “If crew are happy, things are so much easier.”

Capt. Trevor Weaver of M/Y Sirona III

Jesse Peterson and several other government and business leaders listened intently and took notes as Capt. Weaver and several other captains answered questions during a roundtable discussion at La Rascasse during the Monaco Yacht Show on Friday. The event was hosted by Acrew and International Marine Management (IMM).

As director of operations with IMM, the operational company for the Yacht Club at Port de Plaisance, Peterson asked about other concerns.

Safety is at the top, agreed several captains. Capt. Philip Hopson recounted past times working in areas considered unsafe and said it is vital that crew are safe in marinas and surrounding areas. He cited Rybovich shipyard in West Palm Beach, Florida, as a good example of a facility where crew like to stay on property with amenities provided.

“This type of setting creates a sense of ownership,” Capt. Hopson said. “Crew stay around longer if they think they’re being looked after.”

Peterson agreed in the value of keeping crew happy and meeting their needs, and he added that many people outside of the industry don’t understand their workload and stress levels. To help with that, several employees on the marina staff have yachting backgrounds, he said.

Acknowledging that everything can’t be close, Capt. Weaver suggested better options for bus or water taxi services to bars, restaurants and other services around the island.

“I know it’s an added expense,” Capt. Weaver said. That segued the conversation to the relatively narrow Simpson Bay Bridge through which Yacht Club at Port de Plaisance and other marinas are located.

“Why not widen the bridge?” asked Capt. Weaver.

Peterson and Stuart Johnson, the St. Maarten minister of tourism, economic affairs, transportation and telecommunications, both weighed in with answers. The bridge was widened in 1999 and additional work on the bridge, the main access into and out of Simpson Bay Lagoon, is still on the island’s plans, they said.

“We have had setbacks,” Johnson said. Hurricane Irma in 2017 re-prioritized spending toward other infrastructure projects. The government wants to dredge to deeper than the current 17-foot depth, but there is first a focus on dockage and what crew will do when they visit, he said.

On that note, he mentioned that both French St. Martin and Dutch St. Maarten have signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) to work together with a 5- to 10-year plan to increase depth and widen the bridge.

Capt. Ivan Aenski initiated a conversation about boats in the lagoon during heavy weather and wind conditions, to which Peterson acknowledged 30-40 knot winds in certain seasons and the damage from the hurricane.

“We never saw something like Irma,” he said. Boats were allowed to stay in the harbor, “but we noticed there was no protection with this hurricane.”

The damage from the Category 5 storm shapes current discussions with engineers on how to build docks and moorings. The topic of redevelopment led to the roundtable discussion, with IMM interested in how captains feel about new marina development.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” Capt. Weaver said. Where the boat goes depends on the yacht owner, he said. Some want to experience remote natural areas, others want easy access to marinas and cities.

“For me, the whole point to go into this career was to experience other parts of the world,” Capt. Weaver said. He enjoys undeveloped areas but admitted that part of the job requires the have access to parts, spares, supplies and provisions.

“It’s important to have both,” Capt. Hopson said. “But it is a long-term struggle because to get those things, an area can be ruined.”

On that, Capt. Weaver said he and the crew on M/Y Sirona III have especially enjoyed the trails on St. Maarten, but found many closed or in disrepair recently.

Mapping, cleaning and signage have been fixed on several hiking trails, according to Ichel Moeslikan, head of visitor relations and product development with the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau.

To continue to balance the development equation, the government wants to promote year-round visitation to the island. Since Hurricane Irma hit, business growth has recovered and boomed, Johnson said. About 300 new restaurants and 200 new businesses have registered, he said, and hotel occupancy is up. Vehicular traffic improvements are under discussion and progress is underway for the airport to have U.S. customs clearance. Flights are expected to expand to Texas by summer.

That led to the topic of immigration.

“It’s easier with agents in some places but is harder in remote areas,” Capt. Weaver said. “But it is part of the experience.”

Basically, like in much of the yachting industry, rules are in place, and we all need to stick by them, Capt. Weaver said.

The frustration of getting cruising permits and navigating visas and passports can be enough to put off travel to a country that requires too much in fees, Capt. Hopson said. “They get our taxes, but not if we don’t go, another double-edged sword,” he said.

BWA Yachting’s operations manager in Simpson Bay Marina, Melissa Jouan, addressed several specific questions on travel between the two sides of the island, as well as crew that enter on a yacht, yet fly out. Basically, she said, there have been no changes to immigration rules.

As the discussion wrapped up, Johnson said the government has initiated an impact study to “sensitize and educate” the public on a large scale. This brought the conversation back around to specific needs of yachts and crew to access businesses during off hours.

“Our business is 24 hours a day, not closed on Saturday and Sunday,” Capt. Weaver said.

To end, Capt. Weaver said crew are not all about having their needs met; they also want to improve places they visit.

Yachts have used clothing, linens and other items that they would like to donate to charities on the island.

“All About a Smile” is a charity program to help foster children and others in need, Peterson said. Although slow to get going, the group recently acquired refrigerators and freezers to accept food donations. BWA Yachting also accepts donations from crew.

Capt. Weaver agreed, and added, “The more we know how, the more we will do.”

GoFundMe Account for killer Scott Hapgood’s campaign SHUT DOWN by Unity For Justice!

A GoFundMe page created for a Darien man as he fights manslaughter charges in Anguilla has been pulled by the site for violating its terms of service, GoFundMe said.

The campaign to raise money for Scott Hapgood and his family raised more than $250,000 toward its $400,000 goal by Wednesday after just six days, before it was removed on Thursday.

And a Facebook page dedicated to “justice” for the man the Hapgoods say was killed when Scott Hapgood defended himself and his children from an attack contained both angry messages about the campaign and celebration that the page was pulled.

The Facebook page, called “Unity for Justice” shared a screenshot of the GoFundMe on Sept. 22, with the caption, “This is how you buy your way out of murdering someone. His supporters are lined up and marching full speed ahead with no breaks.”

Another post encourages others to report the page.

“I just reported it. Everyone needs to do so as well as this is still an ongoing investigation,” the poster wrote.

“What if he is convicted. Than all of that money raised was to support a man who murdered somebody. Enough reports will possibly get it removed,” the poster wrote.

GoFundMe confirmed that the campaign was pulled for violating the terms of service and, and requests for further information were directed to the terms of service page. It did not specify which term the campaign violated and did not respond to the question. However, one of the terms deemed a violation it includes is:

“Campaigns we deem, in our sole discretion, to be in support of, or for the legal defense of alleged crimes associated with hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender or gender identity, or serious disabilities or diseases.”

Thursday afternoon, the Unity for Justice page posted a screenshot of the Tweet from The Darien Times announcing the GoFundMe campaign had been pulled from the site with a celebratory message.

“Thank you!!!! Supporters of Kenny weren’t tolerating this mass of lies. Shut it Down!!! Thank you, every single one of you who reported this fraudulent campaign made a difference. Kenny wasn’t allowed to speak so we will speak for him! Keep the Pressure!” it read.

The Darien Times has reached out to “Unity for Justice” administrators for comment.

The purpose of the GoFundMe campaign before its deletion was “Please help Scott and his family as they fight to regain the life they worked so hard to build. Funds raised will be exclusively directed towards legal, administrative, travel-related, and personal security expenses associated with the recent tragedy in the Hapgoods life.”

The funds were administered by the Prichard family, described as “longtime friends of the Hapgoods.”

Most of the donations were under $1,000, but there were several in the amounts of $1,000 and $2,000. Some are at $5,000 or nearly that amount, including a combined contribution from the CT Grizzlies, described as a “premiere lacrosse club.” The Darien Times was informed about the GoFundMe by a parent on that team who said the Hapgoods’ daughter plays for the Grizzlies with her child.

There was also one individual donation in the amount of $10,000.

Hapgood, a Darien resident who is on leave from his job as a UBS trader, has been accused of killing the hotel worker in April during a violent struggle while on vacation with his family in the Caribbean.

The Hapgoods’ three children — ages 14, 12 and 9 — have been kept largely out of the spotlight throughout the international media frenzy since the initial incident over spring break.

“The Go Fund Me page set up for us is a reminder to our family of how fortunate we are to be surrounded by the most incredible circle of friends and family. We will be forever grateful to everyone who has donated such badly needed funds as we try to move forward from the nightmare we are living,” the Hapgood family said at the time of its creation.

“Although we wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone, the support from the Fairfield County, Dartmouth and Kansas communities, both financial and otherwise, has made us realize how blessed we are,” they said through spokesman Jamie Diaferia of Infinite Global.

Diaferia confirmed the page had been pulled due to terms of service, but said since the family had not set it up directly, they were unsure of the next steps.

Hapgood’s attorney, Juliya Arbisman, of Amsterdam & Partners LLP, said Anguilla police have warned of potential threats of violence as her client has returned to the island several times in the past month for court appearances.

The Hapgood family has said the Darien man was defending himselfand his young children after Mitchel came to their room to fix a bathroom sink. Hapgood contended the sink was never broken and no one called for someone to come to their room, but he trusted Mitchel because he was wearing a hotel uniform.

The family has accused Mitchel of pulling a knife, resulting in Hapgood “fighting for his life” and being bitten multiple times, including on the face.

A toxicology report released last month revealed Mitchel tested positive for cocaine, Delta-9 THC (the active substance in marijuana) and other drugs. The report also showed that Mitchel had a blood-alcohol content level of .181, which is more than double the legal limit in the United States and the United Kingdom, which is .08.

“The toxicology report confirms that Scott Hapgood had no choice but to defend himself and his children from the frenzied attack of a man under the influence of a dangerous combination of illegal drugs and alcohol,” Arbisman said after the report was released.

Residents on the island were outraged Hapgood was permitted to return to Connecticut after Mitchel’s death. Hapgood was originally held at Her Majesty’s Prison in Anguilla when he was denied bail. But he was later released on bond after his attorney appealed to the High Court.

Earlier this month, Hapgood’s spokesman said he had fulfilled his bail requirements by attending all of his court dates and will return to Anguilla in November as the court considers the next steps.

Sint Maarten IP offices pledges recovery following devastating hurricanes

The IP Bureau of Sint Maarten (BIP) has met a representative from the government’s Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport & Telecommunication to present its financial statement for last year. During the presentation, the director of the office described the hard work being done following recent natural disasters. “The devastating after-effects of hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017 have, as expected, had a major impact on the entire region and on Sint Maarten,” they said. “The year 2018, thus, was a period of recovery for the Bureau. Although the road to full recovery is long, together we can all contribute towards Sint Maarten’s growth and this is what the Bureau aims to do. The Bureau looks forward to being more visible in the public by creating more awareness about intellectual property rights which will aid in the further development of the country’s economy.” As part of the statement, the director also pledged to increase awareness of IP across the country, especially in relation to small and micro businesses. Scientists Race to Stop ‘Ebola’ of Coral Diseases From Spreading in U.S. Virgin Islands, St Maarten and Surrounding Islands

Scientists are racing to save coral reefs off the coast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands from a virulent, deadly disease, Reuters reported Thursday, taking the unusual step of removing infected coral from the reef.
Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) was first discovered in Florida in 2014. It begins as white patches that take over the coral, killing 66 to 100 percent of the species it infects. Between 2013 and 2018, it led to a coral decline in Florida’s Upper Keys of more than 40 percent.

“I have never seen anything that affects so many species, so quickly and so viciously—and it just continues,” Marilyn Brandt of the University of the Virgin Islands told Reuters. “All the diseases I’ve studied in the past could be considered like the flu. They come every year, seasonally, and sometimes there are worse outbreaks. This thing is more like Ebola. It’s a killer, and we don’t know how to stop it.”

The disease was first spotted close to the U.S. Virgin Islands in early 2019, The BVI Beacon reported Tuesday.

Once it infects a coral, it spreads quickly, at a rate of a couple of centimeters per day.

“Within a month, you’ll have the entire coral head gone,” Association of Reef KeepersDirector Dr. Shannon Gore told The BVI Beacon.

Between corals, it moves at a rate of about five kilometers (approximately three miles) per month. Since its discovery in Florida in 2014, it has impacted more than 96,000 acres of reef and spread 250 miles down the Florida coast.

SCTLD has also been spotted off the coasts of St. Maarten, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Jamaica.

In Florida, it has impacted half of the stony corals that make up the Florida Reef Tract, including five endangered species, Newsweek reported.

In addition to removing diseased coral, scientists have attempted to treat it by removing healthy corals and applying antibiotics directly to reefs, but scientists are also working on a long-term solution, including a potential probiotic, according to The BVI Beacon.

Scientists are also hoping to better understand the disease in order to find a cure.

“NOAA scientists are working with partners to identify a pathogen that causes the tissue loss, better characterize transmission of the disease, and understand the patterns of spread throughout the reef and overall impacts of the disease,” Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator Dr. Andy Bruckner told Newsweek.

Corals around the world are more susceptible to disease because of the warmer oceantemperatures caused by the climate crisis, according to Yale Environment 360. Coral bleaching, when warm water forces coral to expel the algae that give them food and color, makes coral more likely to get sick.

The coral near Miami where the disease was first discovered had just endured both a dredging project and a bleaching event, scientists told Reuters.
