The ChristenUnie wants a new law against child abuse on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

The cabinet must work on a law that also prohibits physical and psychological violence against children on the BES islands. Child abuse is already prohibited by law in the Netherlands and on Sint Maarten, Curaçao and Aruba, but not yet on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

The gap in current legislation must be closed, the CU argues. “It is important that we set clear boundaries about what is and what is not possible,” says CU MP Stieneke van der Graaf. The current law leaves too much room in particular in the area of psychological violence. The politician calls on responsible Secretary of State Raymond Knops to come up with a bill for the 5,200 children on the BES islands. Children’s rights organizations such as Unicef have long been concerned about the position of children in the Caribbean Netherlands. The CU wants parents to be better helped “to shape the upbringing properly.”
