Candidate CDA Member of Parliament Jaap Jonkers started a petition on January 28 to “give recognition to colorful Dutch people who have made a special contribution to our Kingdom.” Partly inspired by the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, he wants to draw positive attention to diversity in the Netherlands. This should include a tribute to Maria Liberia Peters and Juancho Evertsz, both former prime ministers of the Netherlands Antilles, says Jonkers.

His campaign team wants to present the petition in the Lower House on Thursday 4 March . In the campaign he works together with Gwendell Mercelina Jr., who is on the electoral list for the parliamentary elections in Curaçao on behalf of the Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP), a sister party of the CDA. Jonkers and Mercelina are building a bridge between the Netherlands and the Caribbean islands of the Kingdom. Giving recognition to colorful Dutch people is part of this.

Jonkers, who lives in Joure, was born 35 years ago in La Paz, Bolivia. There he had been abandoned. The adoption by his Dutch parents gave Jonkers opportunities that he would otherwise not have had. “There are opportunities to pass on”, Jonkers states in his campaign video. Jaap Jonkers is in 27th place for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). The parliamentary elections will take place on Wednesday 17 March 2021.
