The announcement was made in the early afternoon. The prefecture and the ARS Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy have informed that the English variant of SARSCoVv 2 has been identified in 9 people: 5 residents of Guadeloupe and 4 of Saint-Martin. These are mostly young people, health authorities said. About ten samples had been sent to France, to the national reference center, to be analyzed more closely. Nine exhibited the characteristics of the English variant.

As provided for in the procedure, the current contact-tracing has been reinforced and the investigations to search for contacts at risk extended around these people detected positive.

Invited by France Info this Tuesday, February 9, Olivier Véran, Minister of Health, indicated that the presence of Covid-19 variants in overseas territories could lead the government “to change the” vaccine strategy in Overseas. This could involve the use of messenger RNA type vaccines, “which seem to be more effective on South African variants”.

So far, 23 positive cases of virus variants have been detected in Martinique.
