Former parliamentarian Frans Richardson was sentenced on appeal to twenty months in prison on Tuesday. He will be sentenced for accepting more than $370,000 as a reward for political support for a dredging project in the port of Sint Maarten and for tax fraud.

Richardson, former leader of the political party USP, is also not allowed to stand for election for the next five years. He was initially sentenced to 36 months.

In the same case, a former public relations officer of the port authority on the island was sentenced on appeal to 40 months in prison for defrauding the port, bribing MP Richardson, being in possession of a firearm and ammunition and committing of tax fraud.

A former director of the port company, who was first sentenced to almost four years in prison, has been acquitted of all charges on appeal. In recent years, several administrators and politicians on the island have been convicted of fraud and corruption.
