5.8 quake hit off the coast of Grand Terre Island, Guadeloupe.
A 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Grand Terre Island in Guadaloupe, an overseas region of France, about an hour past midnight on Friday, 26 March 2021 local time. The epicenter was located 60 km northeast of the island, at a depth of 26 km.

Within minutes after the quake, we received multiple reports from users who have felt moderate shaking. Some reported hearing a noise before feeling the quake. Many of the users described being woken up from their sleep due to the shaking. The quake was felt at up to 300 km from the epicenter, reaching Martinique.
Beds and doors were shaken during the quake, but no significant damage has been reported. At least 3 aftershocks were recorded by our monitoring service. The strongest of which was a 4.9 quake that occurred 9 hours after the main shock.

The quake occurred near the Puerto Rico Trench. This is the physical manifestation of an active subduction of the South American Plate under the Caribbean Plate. The Antilles, where Guadeloupe and its constituents are located, is situated on top of the eastern edge of the Caribbean Plate.
According to IRIS, a consortium of 120 universities from the United States of America, there have only been a few strong quakes along the Lesser Antilles Subduction Zone. The strongest of these is the 1974 Antigua Earthquake. It had a magnitude of 7.5, and it was the strongest quake recorded that year, worldwide.

Significant magnitude 5.8 earthquake 96 km northeast of Les Abymes, Guadeloupe
5.8 quake 26 Mar 12:51 am (GMT -4)
5.8 quake 26 Mar 12:51 am (GMT -4)
A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported after midnight near Les Abymes, Guadeloupe.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday 26 March 2021 at 12:51 am local time at a shallow depth of 26 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Saint-François (pop. 12,700) located 78 km from the epicenter, Les Abymes (pop. 63,100) 96 km away, and Baie-Mahault (pop. 30,600) 104 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint John (pop. 24,200) located 127 km from the epicenter, and Basse-Terre (pop. 11,500) 134 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
