Latest Sint Maarten Government Update Hurricane Irma At 5:00 AM LST the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.0 North, longitude 47.5 West or about 1024 miles east of St. Maarten. Irma is moving toward west southwest near 15 mph (24 km/h), and this course at a slightly slower forward speed is expected through tonight and then a turn toward the west on Monday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast through Monday night.
The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) will continue to monitor the progress of Irma. Members of the public are advised to monitor the updates on this system and make all necessary preparations for its passage.
