St. Maarten and Royal Caribbean Meet, Discuss Homeporting April 12 2021

Representatives from Royal Caribbean Group and Port St. Maarten during a meeting in early April 2021.

The management of Port St. Maarten has met with Royal Caribbean Group executives for strategic discussions concerning further strengthening their partnership.

The two groups, among other things, talked about the future homeporting of the Celebrity Millennium in St. Maarten, which starts this June.

“We looked at how we can further increase and enhance homeporting opportunities and other potential business based on the ports Ernest & Young High Level Strategic Plan,” the port’s management said on Apr. 8, according to the port’s social media page.

“The Royal Caribbean Group executives were also introduced to the Chief Operations Officer of the Princess Juliana International Airport – St. Maarten with respect to the homeporting of the Celebrity Millennium and what the logistics would entail for such an operation. All three parties have to be in sync, and close collaboration is needed in order to make a success out of this opportunity,” it added.

Port St. Maarten said that it is committed to working closely with partners in further enhancing the infrastructure, visitor experiences and building upon a solid foundation that has existed with the cruise industry.

“Additional discussions will be taking place in the coming weeks with respect to further extending current partnerships,” the port added.

The Royal Caribbean executives were given a site tour of the facility, which will play a primary role in processing cruise guests prior to boarding the Celebrity Millennium and upon their return.

The preparations for the homeporting of the Celebrity Millennium, which will set sail from the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facility on June 5, 2021, are continuing, the port said.

The 2.038-guest Celebrity Millennium will be offering seven-night itineraries departing through August 2021. According to a recent press release from Royal Caribbean Group, the ship will sail with vaccinated crew, and will be available to vaccinated adult guests and children under the age of 18 with a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of embarkation.

The Celebrity Millennium is expected to sail with approximately 50 percent capacity in the initial stage.

The management of Port St. Maarten said this would be the largest homeporting vessel to date to carry out operations at the country’s main seaport.

“This is the first time that we will be carrying out homeporting operations during the hurricane season and, therefore, will be taking additional precautionary measures to guarantee a seamless operation during the period the vessel is homeporting out of St. Maarten,” the port’s management said.

“The past homeporting experience since 2013 – that the port has garnered over the years from this niche market – is based on the synergy of all staff, along with management, which was one of the contributing factors for the Royal Caribbean Group to select St. Maarten,” it added.

According to the port, the build back of the current homeporting facility will take approximately two weeks. The Port St. Maarten team is working at “full speed ahead on the buildup in close collaboration with the Group in order to assure a smooth and efficient resumption of the cruise business to St. Maarten,” the port said

The port believes that homeporting will generate more airlifts via the Princess Juliana International Airport, bring additional business for local service providers where it concerns vessel provisioning and fuel supply, and create the potential for pre- and post-cruise extension visits at hotels. In addition, it will increase business activity for restaurants, tour operators, taxis, car rental companies and many other varied small and medium-sized business operations and entrepreneurs. https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/24751-port-st-maarten-and-royal-caribbean-meet-discuss-homeporting.html

Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard In Shootout With Speeding Vessel

April 12, 2021

The Aruba Coast Guard intercepted a light motorized vessel last Thursday.

It was brought to a stop with shots. A warning shot had already been fired, but then the vessel took off. They searched ashore for drugs and possibly dropped Venezuelans, but the police found nothing. Two men have been arrested and the boat has been confiscated. https://www.dolfijnfm.com/kustwacht-aruba-onderschept-al-schietend-een-go-fast/

“MFK does not want to argue with the Netherlands, but just serious cooperation”

WILLEMSTAD – After informateurs (pathfinders) Martha and Peterson presented their interim report on the formation of a new government in Curaçao to Governor Lucille George-Wout, she received the political leaders of the Movementu Futuro Korsou Gilmar Pisas and of the Partido Nashonal di Pueblo Ruthmila Larmonie-Cecilia. The formation process is speeding up says both leaders.

“If all goes well, we will have a coalition agreement before the end of the month.” “This was announced by the chairman of the MFK, Sithree van Heydoorn. “Our goal is to be sworn in at the same time as the inauguration of the new parliament on May 11th.”

Since the elections on March 19, Curaçao has been working hard to establish a new government. It will most likely consist of the MFK (the big winner with nine seats) and the PNP (which saw itself return to parliament with four seats). What is striking is the speed with which the new government is being formed. Already during election night, leaders of the two parties announced that they would like to form a government together. Two days after the elections, a declaration of willingness was signed and a week later the distribution of ministerial posts was signed.

Working groups

Van Heydoorn: “As MFK, we quickly set to work to determine what we think the coalition agreement should look like. Sessions were planned this week to consult with the PNP in various working groups. But due to the corona situation, we have canceled that. In recent days, the parties have written down in their own circle what they want to get done in “their” ministries for the next four years. The MFK wants to be ready with that before the weekend. Then the two parties will meet again.”

According to the MFK chairman, “the green party” PNP is also working hard. The parties say it is working seriously to draw up the best possible coalition agreement. At the same time, Rutsel Martha (former Minister of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles and now a renowned lawyer in international law) and the well-known Curaçao lawyer Chester Peterson started working as pathfinders. On April 6, they handed in their information assignment to the governor. Both want to continue working on the formation process. On Friday, the governor spoke about this with the leaders of MFK and PNP.

Flexible

It is striking how smoothly the cooperation has been so far. There is no ‘leakage’ to the press by negotiators and politically sensitive matters such as the introduction of the Caribbean Body for Reform and Development (COHO) and the fight against the corona pandemic has been labeled by the parties as a ‘special topic’ that was discussed in a joint effort.

From Curaçao, the other parties are remarkably quiet, especially after the many election rhetoric for March 19. Coalition parties PAR (down from six to four seats) and MAN (down from four to two) are engaged in the final weeks of the Rhuggenaath government. New parties Trabou pa Kòrsou and KEM hardly make themselves heard anymore; at least not in public. The MFK / PNP coalition still keeps the possibility open for more parties to join. But that must be done on the basis of the coalition agreement that the two draw up together.

Criticism from Dutch Senator

The only fierce criticism so far came from the Netherlands, from PvdA senator Jeroen Recourt. He said last week during a debate in the Senate that the MFK was responsible for ‘financial mismanagement’ during the Schotte government between 2010 and 2012 and that the Netherlands must therefore now look closely at the public finances of the island because the MFK for the first time rejoins the government.

Van Heydoorn responded directly to Recourt’s criticism by saying that the comment makes no sense at all. “The Schotte government left behind the same government reserves as there were at the beginning of its term. The governments since then have become much more indebted and now there are no reserves at all.” He regrets that some Dutch politicians are already putting the new government of MFK and PNP in a negative light. “We do not want any quarrels or conflicts with the Netherlands. We want for us to listen to each other and work together in all seriousness and with respect.” https://www.curacaochronicle.com/post/main/mfk-does-not-want-to-argue-with-the-netherlands-but-just-serious-cooperation/

WHY THE WORD ‘NIGGER’ IS STILL WRITTEN IN FULL IN DUTCH NEWSPAPERS

I was supposed to translate and post last week… then volcanic eruption SOURCE: https://www.oneworld.nl/lezen/analyse/waarom-het-n-woord-nog-voluit-in-de-krant-staat/?mbid=email_onsiteshareThe editors of NRC, de Volkskrant and Trouw, among others, do not have hard rules about racist language, according to a survey. For example, the n-word and ‘blank’ can still end up in the columns. How do the editors view their responsibility? ‘We follow society.’

In the reports about Thierry Baudet’s racist texts in the run-up to the elections, the n-word was used in full in almost all newspapers. Moreover, part of the journal that came to Baudet’s story was not too bad to use the word in full: “Did you ask if someone’s sister could come home with a * beep *?”, “Thierry answer, did you ask? , whether he wants his sister to come home with a * beep *? ” And again, and again. Nobody asked what a man has to say at all about who his sister comes home with, but that aside.

Do newspapers and newspapers actually have rules about racist or colonial language and who determines them? I put these questions to the editors-in-chief of NRC , Trouw , de Volkskrant , De Groene Amsterdammer and Free Netherlands . Spoiler: none of the editors has a conclusive policy.

Master himself

Sjoerd de Jong, ombudsman at NRC who readers can turn to with editorial questions, calls the language policy of his newspaper ‘liberal’ : “The newspaper follows the language as it develops in society, without taking the lead.” Practice is more nuanced, De Jong continues: “ NRC does not so much follow ‘society’, but a progressive part of it. In a recent supplement on slavery, “enslaved” was the norm. ” Editors, according to a number of pieces on various issues of language use in the newspaper, are largely masters of their own language.

The editors-in-chief of de Volkskrant, Trouw and NRC say that authors in principle choose their own words

Also Volkskrant editor-in-chief Pieter Klok says he is striving for progressive language use, as does deputy editor-in-chief Martijn Roessingh of Trouw . But if newspapers do indeed adopt a progressive attitude, why does it still often go wrong with racist (n-word) or colonial (‘Third World’) language?

The editors of de Volkskrant

, Trouw and NRC all three say that authors in principle choose their own words. But that is not possible without a guide. De Volkskrant and Trouw have a Style Book, at NRC a Style Guide, in which the most diverse language issues are described. Think of the use of words such as “immigrant” (in all style pointers: avoid) and the n-word (in all newspapers: only in quotations), but also punctuation marks and dashes, or the spelling of geographical names. The style guides are mainly used by the editors and are reportedly regularly updated. And with all the newspapers surveyed here, the editor-in-chief ultimately has the final say The final judgment has not yet been reached on “white” versus “white” It is striking that both Trouw and de Volkskrant and NRC have several alternatives available for a range of concepts. There is no longer a discussion about the n-word – no editor wants to use that (which does not include columnists, but more about that later) – but the final verdict has not yet been reached on “white” versus “white”. You can also find slave, enslaved and enslaved in all newspapers. Even within pieces there can be inconsistency on that. According to the editors-in-chief, this is, for example, to promote readability (using ‘someone with a non-Western migration background’ every time in a piece, is difficult to read), or simply because not all interviewees quoted use the same terminology. Using or naming words Quotes are a different story. Both Pieter Klok of de Volkskrant and NRC ombudsman De Jong let it be known that they are untouchable. De Jong: “If you want to know what Baudet texted, or if you want to portray him as a journalist, you have to quote him. This has to do with the distinction between using words to refer to reality and mentioning a word in a quote or to say something about that word. That distinction sometimes seems to blur in discussions about racist language: the n-word in quotations, historical references or other forms of mention is then no longer allowed. ”

The distinction between using and mentioning is not always allowed. unambiguous, says De Jong. He stays with Baudet’s example for a while: “If you quote him so often and eagerly or uncritically that mentioning becomes another provocative or offensive form of practice, it can become a form of” indirect racism “.” In any case, a new assessment must be made.

Quotes are untouchable: if you want to know what Baudet texted, you have to quote it

Yet you still throw racist words in the face of your readers. Would there be room in Dutch newspapers to write racist words partly with asterisks? There is also something to consider, such as this article in The Guardian (with n-word) shows, but placed the asterisk functions as’ a shield between the reader and evil ‘. The Guardian concludes: “The asterisk is the only keystroke that can rob words of their power.”

Volkskrant editor-in-chief Klok does not rule out that the newspaper will use that solution, because, he says fiercely: “I don’t really want the n-word in my newspaper at all anymore.” He cites an example: “Recently we had a piece about protest songs, in which the Singer Zonder Naam was also discussed who sang about racism. It mentioned the name of a number in which the n-word occurred. When I read that, I thought: I really don’t want it anymore. ”

Then why was it there anyway? Klok: “Because up to now we have the line that it is allowed in quotations, which include book and song titles. Quotes are sacred. I can’t quite grasp the repercussions of asterisks yet, it must be understandable for all readers, but I imagine we are entering it. ”

How political is language?

René Moerland , editor-in-chief of NRC , does not reject the use of asterisks in advance, but clarity comes first, he explains: “You have to be able to describe what the debate is about. Imagine a name of a painting in which you replace part of a word with asterisks, do readers know which word you mean? On the other hand, we naturally have the luxury that we have the space to give context in the newspaper. That also argues against the use of asterisks, because you can always explain the word use. ”

We want to report well, not form the social debate with activist language

René Moerland, editor-in-chief NRC

Is there also a fear that he will lose more conservative readers if he gets ahead of the troops in terms of language? Moerland: “No, it is not calculating. I see language as a journalistic choice, not a political one. In the first place, we want to report properly, not to form the social debate with activist language. Word choice says something about people you interview or about whom you make a report, we want to use it broadly and refer to it without taboos. We are deliberately following. ”

White and white are still used interchangeably in NRC . Moerland recognizes that “white” socially can become just as not done as the n-word. But if you already feel on your clogs that white is going to disappear to describe skin color, why not get rid of it now? Moerland: “Because we want to show pluralism in society. That is more important than our position on the word. ” Even if it hurts? “Reporting sometimes hurts. The moment white acquires more and more political connotation and white becomes more the norm, it will also change for us. ”

But the role of the media is also to question and challenge power. feel, so the question is whether that should not be expressed in the word usage. Moerland rejects that: “Take a word like ‘enslaved’. The word “slave” is still often used in society and if you refuse that too early as a newspaper, the reporting does not reflect society. ” He refers to the cultural pages, where “slave” hardly occurs anymore: “In the museum world,” enslaved “is much more the standard and you can see that in the reporting.”

Pieter Klok of de Volkskrant also does not want to know anything about the relationship between power and language. This becomes clear when he is presented with the discrepancy between his wish not to see the n-word in the Volkskrant columns on the one hand and the printing of columns by, among others, Arthur van Amerongen, in which the n -word recently appeared in full. Power systems are also perpetuated by language, and if you measure power as a journalist, wouldn’t that be a reason to get ahead of the troops? Klok: “Is that the case that language preserves power? There is room for discussion about this. ”

Columnists are free, he says. Even if their text is racist or Islamophobic? Klok: “Then you come to the question of what racism is. The literal definition according to the Van Dale is that you consider one people inferior to another. I don’t read that in our columnists. ” But you can express that belief in many more or less subtle ways, can’t you? “But you can also read it while it may not be,” he responds. He rejects that racism is a power system: “You may wonder whether you should broaden the definition of racism. You have to prevent everything from being called racist. ”

Also Trouw was asked about this discrepancy between the desire to be progressive in language and the publishing of columns by, for example, Sylvain Ephimenco , in which racism being downplayed. The newspaper indicated that it would not go into more detail on the issue and would stick to the previous emailed general comments on language use.

Weekly-magazines-have-more-leeway

Weekly-magazines are probably included less common for linguistic dilemmas: they do not cover the hard news and do not have to report on racist and sexist excesses by Baudet and others, for example. Have you just seen that last year they suddenly joined Vrij Nederland with the famous writer and poet Simon Carmiggelt (1913-1987) were in their stomach, says editor-in-chief Ward Wijndelts: “ VN existed for eighty years and we published the best piece every year. We also selected a piece from Carmiggelt from the late 1940s, about Sinterklaas. The n-word was in it. That was not possible, but what should you do? Are you going to mess around in Carmiggelt’s work? In the end we chose another piece by Carmiggelt. ”

He could also have chosen asterisks, just like in an interview with Sylvana Simons in which reference was made to the moment at De Wereld Draait Door where Simons’ political career began: when Martin Šimek used ‘zw * rtj * s’ and Simons reacted to it. Vrij Nederland wrote the word out in full. Wijndelts is not sure why and suggests calling the editor-in-chief immediately. Five minutes later he calls back: “It has been considered not to write it out in full, but the word is not used enough for that and people may not know what you mean. This is different with the n-word, which everyone knows by now. I do not necessarily reject the use of asterisks. The principle is quite simple: you want to show civilization in your language and that can be done in various ways. “

Writing intellectuals think about their words themselves, you can’t just touch them

In all media surveyed for this article, the responsibility for language use lies partly with the author, but with de Groene Amsterdammer this goes one step further, it appears as editor-in-chief Xandra Schutte describes her weekly: “De Groene is an authors’ magazine. If we find word usage problematic, the best thing we can do is call the author to ask if he or she is sure he or she wants to say something that way. ” She remembers that professor (emeritus) of Sociology and author Abram de Swaan once became angry when the final editors had replaced the word “white” with “white” in his paper. Schutte: “We should not have done that just like that. Writing intellectuals think about their own words. The language someone uses is directly related to someone’s thinking, so as an editorial team you cannot just touch that. ”

Moreover, Schutte believes that as a white woman she is not always in a position to approach someone. speaking on word usage. She takes as an example Stephan Sanders, who calls herself “brown”. Schutte: “Some people find that a problematic term, but I have nothing to say about what he calls himself.”

‘Language-is-a-wreck-construction “

The examples presented by Wijndelts and Schutte show that what is possible and what is not possible is constantly changing. Wijndelts has no illusions about his own capacity as a pioneer: “I am confronted with my perspective when there is criticism and that is necessary, because I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. My job is to listen to anyone who does not feel comfortable in the current constellation, and not to downplay their perspective. Take this conversation we’re having now, that’s ammo for change. Vrij Nederland is not a pioneer, but in ten years’ time I hope to look back and conclude that we were not lagging behind either. ”

Grant for project Virgin Islands Dutch Creole

Linguist Cefas van Rossem,  visiting researcher Virgin Islands Dutch Creole  at the Meertens Institute, together with a group of researchers, has received a grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands to draw attention to the Virgin Islands Dutch Creole on the islands themselves.

Virgin Islands Dutch Creole version of
‘O Head Full of Blood and Wounds’: manuscript 1749-1753

In addition to Van Rossem, the research team consists of Gylchris Sprauve, musician and promoter of Virgin Islands heritage, Gilbert Sprauve (em. University of the US Virgin Islands), who recorded the last spoken Virgin Islands Dutch Creole since the 1960s and Peter Stein (em. University of Bremen), discoverer of many slave letters and authority on eighteenth-century Creole material. In the coming period they will record the most original and authentic texts, chants and conversations in films. These are, for example, old slave letters, slave songs and folktales, translated psalms, sample conversations from language descriptions, and the latest stories and conversations of the last speakers.

You can listen to a recording via the following link  from the song ‘O Head Full of Blood and Wounds’, by Gylchris Sprauve, one of the team members of this project. https://werkgroepcaraibischeletteren.nl/beurs-voor-project-virgin-islands-dutch-creole/

Construction of the new KNMI monitoring station for our volcano is well on its way Saba

Works to construct a new monitoring station of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) on the northern coast of Saba are progressing steadily. A team of Dutch military personnel, stationed in St. Maarten, has been carrying the materials along the North Coast Trail to the location on Grey Hill where a KNMI team is constructing the new monitoring station.
Military personnel had the strenuous task to carry some 2,000 kilograms in material up to Grey Hill along the rough North Coast Trail

Military personnel on Thursday, April 8, ahead of time, completed the heavy task of carrying some 2000 kilograms of material on foot along the North Coast Trail, covering a difference in altitude of some 300 meters. On multiple trips per day, the men carried a number of very heavy items up the rough, mountainous trek to Grey Hill, such as a generator, a large satellite dish, the solar panels, and the casing for the electronics. They also carried multiple bags with concrete and a load of water, necessary to mix concrete for the construction of the monitoring station and its foundations.

The KNMI team (at right) with Dutch Defense personnel and Island Governor Jonathan Johnson and Advisor Crisis Management Marjolein Veneman (at left)

The KNMI team of four has constructed the foundation and the walls of the enclosure that will hold the seismic equipment. The team on Thursday started the construction of the frame for the solar panels. The foundation for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) was constructed, and the cables were laid in the cable ducts. The mast for the satellite dish has been installed. The construction of the monitoring station needs to be robust as it has to be able to withstand strong winds.

The construction of the concrete enclusure fort he seismic meter.

The monitoring station consists of a GNSS and a seismometer. With the GNSS, deformations of the Mt. Scenery volcano can be precisely measured. The seismometer registers local and regional earthquakes, and this data will also be used for tsunami warnings. The measuring station on Saba’s North Coast is extra special because it operates completely independently: the solar panels generate electricity while the satellite dish transmits the data.

On Thursday, April 8, Island Governor Jonathan Johnson visited the location, whereby he presented a Saba pin to Sergeant-Major Marine Frank. The military personnel arrived on Saba on April 5 and will return to St. Maarten shortly. A number of military personnel have already left Saba. The KNMI team will remain on the island a bit longer to complete the construction of the monitoring station and to inspect, and if necessary, repair the other monitoring stations, located in various parts of the island.

Point Blanche Prison Is An Incubator For Gangs By Soualiga Youth: Reblogged

Point Blanche Prison an incubator for Gangs.

The Pointe Blanche prison on Sint Maarten is a salient potent example of, the endemic corruption and inability, of the present neo-colonial system of governance on Sint Maarten and the former Netherlands Antilles, being unable to govern the inmates at the prison while protecting prisoners and staff alike.John van Den Heuvel in his book Sneeuw Over Curacao aka Snow over Curacao, pointed out that guns in prison on Curacao, are a common occurrence and result in multiple death’s, during in-prison liquidations. When Urvin “Nuto” Wawoe, was housed in the Point Blanche prison in 2014, for the first time in St Maarten’s history guns appeared in prison, here on Sint Maarten. The incidence of gun’s in prison on Curacao, are a known well documented reality, gun’s in prison on Sint Maarten were unknown and only manifested as per the corporate media in: “In September 2014, two guns were found in the prison. One man Carlos Richardson was arrested for attempted murder”. The individual, at the center of the prison unrest was Nuto.  Nuto is a well-known shot-caller within the international crime syndicate the No Limit Soldiers, whose power base is Koraal Specht Curacao. Prison director Edward Rohan received a letter, wherein a death threat was issued to his person in September of 2014, the month that the attempted murder on Nuto, was perpetrated by Richardson. This month September 2016 on Thursday, September 1, the Daily Herald here on Sint Maarten carried the following caption on its front page: Bling Bling leader Jones gunned down in prison

The fact that a little Blogger, falsely attributed the name “Bling Bling”, to the crew led by Jones bears testimony, to the clueless nature of so-called journalism on Sint Maarten. The real Bling Bling crew, were a group of Sint Maarteners, Kittitians, Crucians and people from St Thomas, who were linked either through friendships familial ties and marriage into a capitalist money generating criminal enterprise with cocaine trafficking being their main source of revenue. One of the main players within Bling Bling was a close associate “cousin” of Amador Jones, the brother of the now deceased Omar Jones. Because of a close affiliation with a well-known Bling Bling crew member, the people within the community affiliated the brothers with Bling Bling by name. That was a simple history for the purists who understand the true history of what is being written here. The Daily Herald reported that Omar Jones was killed by a fellow inmate in the prison at Pointe Blanche Sint Maarten, around 9: 00 am Wednesday September 2016.  Eleven inmates were said to be involved in the murder, the gun used was later found in a different cell block, than the one the victim was murdered.

Again as I have stated innumerably the endemic corruption within all levels, of the neo-colonialist power structure on Sint Maarten, creates the type of atmosphere that leads to the type of situation enumerated. And the killing did not stop at the prison. On Friday September 3, 2016 in the morning a known associate of Jones Donnel Thomas, was shot in the leg in St Peters, by a masked man. According to eyewitness accounts, the assassin’s gun fell out of his hand, preventing him from mortally wounding Thomas. On Sunday September 4, 2016 Alrico Daulphin was murdered on Soursap Road St Peters after 1200 am.The insertion of organized criminal syndicates into Sint Maarten society has unalterably changed the fabric and criminal culture locally. The trend is towards corporatizing and organizing within a gang structure. The No Limit Soldiers have introduced to Sint Maarten a hitherto alien criminal structure. The NLS with their corporate structure and sophisticated use of social media, has for lack of a better term, “improved” the image, functionality, lethality and financial know-how and capacity of the Afro-Caribbean criminal sub-culture on Sint Maarten. Teaching them how to, engage the already corrupt prison system to benefit themselves.

The system is short staffed according to the prison director Rohan, with many guards “fearing”, for their lives. It is plain to see who runs the prison. The inmates are governing themselves and not the state, the state only facilitates the nurturance and development of a more sophisticated and adapt gang culture.
