Two wrongs: OPINION | petition submitted to United Nations (UN) in New York by US-based law firm Choharis Legal Solutions on behalf of SXM Parliament

Two wrongs
OPINION | A petition submitted to the United Nations (UN) in New York by US-based law firm Choharis Legal Solutions on behalf of Parliament last week raised eyebrows throughout the kingdom. It asked to investigate violations of the people of St. Maarten’s right to a full measure of self-government.

President of Parliament Rolando Brison authorised this move based on the motion of UP faction leader Grisha Heyliger-Martin passed with 12 votes to three on November 5. A press release announcing the petition was – perhaps fittingly – issued by Brison in his capacity as UP leader.

While the main discussion that led to the motion was getting the Dutch Caribbean back on the UN’s decolonisation list, pursuing this matter through the Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance plus the Working Group of experts on People of African Descent seems to have made it more about oppression based on race. The Dutch government is blamed for using COVID-19 financial assistance to practise such.

The presentation even includes a request to revisit the related Caribbean Body for Reform and Development COHO that is to guide implementation of the so-called “country package” with restructuring measures in exchange for more liquidity loans from the Netherlands, as agreed on by the NA/UP government. Hence the remark by UD leader Sarah Wescot-Williams (see Friday/Saturday paper) that the petition had effectively “pulled the rug” out from under the feet of Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs (NA) and her cabinet.

All this understandably led to fierce reactions in The Hague, especially because the filing was accompanied by an extensive article with these accusations in The Washington Post. Second Chamber of Parliament member for VVD Andre Bosman advised initiating talks on St. Maarten becoming independent, as “nobody in the Netherlands will stop them.”

His Socialist Party (SP) colleague Ronald van Raak went a step further (see related story) by suggesting to temporarily halt financial support. That would obviously be disastrous and highly unfair to many like the PFP faction led by Melissa Gumbs that –together with UD – voted against the relevant motion.

Gumbs warned in a first reaction to the petition that money coming from the Netherlands is currently used for food aid to 4,000 households as well as to fund both the public sector and the St. Maarten Stimulus and Relief Plan (SSRP) “allowing us to take care of our most basic needs.” She also wondered whether the recipients of this Dutch help are the same ones being identified as victims of racial oppression.

To be sure, it is Government, not Parliament that officially represents the country abroad. Moreover, the legislatures of Curaçao and Aruba were also supposed to join this effort but have yet to do so.

Chairman of Curaçao’s Kingdom Affairs Committee Stephen Walroud (PAR) had backed a motion passed last year to send out a letter asking to get back on the UN decolonisation list, even though the rest of his faction voted against. He did so to “end years of discussion” but now says that by choosing the discrimination route St. Maarten is treading on “thin ice” considering its level of prosperity.

It is highly regrettable that much-needed and -appreciated assistance provided by the Netherlands in this unprecedented socioeconomic crisis is depicted as a racial discrimination tool. Stopping it for this reason alone, however, is hardly a humanely acceptable option and would probably be frowned on internationally too.

Two wrongs simply do not make a right.

CTO Forecasting 20 Percent Jump in Caribbean Tourism in 2021

CTO Forecasting 20 Percent Jump in Caribbean Tourism in 2021
The Caribbean Tourism Organization is projecting a 20 percent increase in tourism arrivals in 2021, the Barbados-based agency said this week.

That comes after the Caribbean saw a 65 percent reduction in arrivals in 2020 due to the pandemic.

That 20 percent forecast will likely be accompanied by a similar increase in visitor expenditure, the CTO said.

“The Caribbean’s performance in 2021 will depend largely on the success of the authorities in the marketplace and the region in combatting, containing and controlling the virus. Already, there are some encouraging signs like the vaccine roll-out taking place in North America, Europe and the Caribbean,” the CTO said in a its 2020 tourism performance report for the region.
“However, this must be tempered by some other factors such as: lockdowns in our key source markets which are expected to continue into the second quarter, international travel confidence not expected to pick up until the summer 2021, a steep fall in the number of people planning to travel abroad and the possible requirement by the authorities in our key markets for their citizens to vaccinate before traveling abroad.”

Even amid the pandemic, the Caribbean’s 65.5 percent decline in tourist arrivals was better than the global tourism decline, which was nearly 74 percent.

Stay-over visitors figures show recovery is underway.

Stay-over visitors figures show recovery is underway. SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – The Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau (STB) says that the number of stay-over visitors to the destination is on the increase and this is a sign that recovery of the tourism sector is underway.

In the months of November, December, and January the destination welcomed 32,669 stay over arrivals. December being the month that recorded the highest number of stay-over arrivals, welcoming 13,488 visitors in total.

The breakdown of the arrivals of November, December, and January showcases that 55% of all arrivals were from the US, and 23% from France.

March 2021 marks one-year since the country closed its borders due to the COVID-19 outbreak which later became a global pandemic.

“The restart of tourism started back in the summer of 2020 when we re-opened the Princess Juliana International Airport to visitors based on COVID-19 public health and safety protocols. Our airline partners have been slowly increasing the number of flights to the destination.

“Tourism is the economic sector that has been hardest hit by COVID-19 around the globe including here. 2020 was the worst year in tourism history where there were one billion fewer international arrivals.

“We must be thankful for what has been achieved so far to date based on the on-going pandemic and what is currently happening in our main travel markets. Based on our managed re-opening, our recovery is slowly making progress even though travel restrictions remain in place in many countries.

“Sint Maarten is resilient, and we will continue to do what is necessary to maintain the growth in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders as we continue to be able to compete with the business regionally and globally and emerge stronger from this,” Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Ludmila de Weever said on Monday.

Director of the STB May-Ling Chun, said the past year has been like no other. “The destination was well on its way to recovery after the hurricanes of September 2017. A lot of progress was made in 2018 and 2019, until the pandemic brought global tourism to a standstill which also included Sint Maarten from March 2020 to July 2020, a five-month period.

“The pandemic is now in its second year, but there is much hope with respect to the roll out of vaccines around the world including Sint Maarten. Every destination around the world is facing the same challenges, but we are all working diligently towards recovery,” Chun said on Monday.

TODAY: Former MP/leader US (United St. Maarten Party) Frans Richardson & former leader/founder of the UP (United People’s Party) Theodore Heyliger in court, criminal conduct involving Millions of dollars. WENDELL MOORE

Former MP and leader of the US (United St. Maarten Party) Frans Richardson and former leader and founder of the UP (United People’s Party) Theodore Heyliger are presently before the court having been charged with criminal conduct involving Millions of dollars either stolen or having accepted bribes at the expense of Government and tax payers in overpriced projects that landed millions in their pockets in a string of large scale corruption on St. Maarten.

Heyliger has been found guilty in some of the charges brought against him by the prosecutor’s office to the point where they are eying reclaiming some $ 17 Million of which the prosecutor’s office deems criminal proceeds, Heyliger has illegally earned over the years. Heyliger knew all along that he was being investigated while continuing to serving as one of the most popular politicians on St. Maarten, until he learned his fate after he was picked up on February 19th 2019 and had all these corruption charges brought against him. He of course denied all allegations. His preliminary detention was suspended for medical reasons on May 21st 2019.

On the other hand former US MP and leader of his party Frans Richardson who is also facing a string of bribery cases and wrong doings had his hearing rescheduled for April this year. The many charges brought against Richardson involving Bureau Telecommunication & Post (BTP) Building sale and resale as well as his alleged involvement and accepting of bribes in the code name Emerald Investigation at Port St. Maarten. All of the cases brought against Richardson took place while he was in Parliament and leader of his US Party.

His hearing was scheduled for March 8th and 9th  2021 but was suspended for later this year in April at the request of his lawyer, due to family circumstances. Richardson was also picked up by the Anti-Corruption Taskforce (TBO) and the Kingdom Detective Corporation Team (RST) on September 02nd 2019 on suspicion of accepting bribes, committing official intimidation and abusing his position.

The pattern we are seeing here by our political leaders give reason to believe most politicians on St. Maarten are getting involved in politics solely to enrich themselves once they get in power.  These two famous politicians who, no doubt were admired and voted for by the citizens to represent them in Government; yet they are today been accused of wrongdoings and of accepting bribes on the back of the people whom they represent. Its either they will be found guilty or they are profiled unfairly as corrupt by the Justice system.

Are we to believe the new breed of politicians are poised to follow the footsteps of those before them, making decisions based on their personal interest and covering up for anyone who will engage in misconduct by calling on the Netherlands to stay out of what happens politically on the Island, and allow for full internal self-government even while their actions while leading the Country, remains questionable.

Observations of Grisha Marten by mr.Edwin James

============================================================
HILARIOUS, HEIGHT OF HOSTILE HYPOCRISY and most of all HOGWASH!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger:
When promises made by POLITICIANS are not kept we simply called. that: PROMISES MADE ARE A COMFORT TO A FOOL!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger:
When POLITICIANS are seriously charged for PLUNDERING, PILLAGING and PEDDLING OFF PEOPLE”s PROPERTIES and PATRIMONIES for self enrichment we simply called that: CORRUPTION!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger when POLITICIANS are involved in CRIMINAL and CORRUPTED ACTIVITIES: They are not the “VICTIMS but rather an ACCOMPLICE and CULPRITS!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger when POLITICIANS rather choose to cast a blind eye on and look the other way on IRREGULARITIES we called that: FANNING, FEEDING, FORMENTING and FUELING CORRUPTION!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger when POLITICIANS attempt to petition the UN to obtain INDEPENDENCE without CONSENT of the electorates, the voters and people of ST.Maarten in a COVET, SECTETIVE and SUBTLE manner we call that: BEING DISRESPECTFUL and UNTRUSTWORTHY to our people!

Ms.Gresha Marten Heyliger you are surely living UP UP UP to your public statement when you enter PARLIAMENT as a PARLIAMENTARIAN.

And I quote you:
You came to continue the WATHEY “LEGACY” oops LACKLUSTER LEADERSHIP, LIABILITY and LUNACY!

My advise to our electorates, voters and people of ST.Maarten:

Do not follow or go nowhere with politicians or parties who are not going anywhere except DOWN THE DRAIN OF NO RETURN!

€21 MILLION+ Invested In An Investigation, NO working contact number

Explain to Holland taxpayers how you Invested €21 MILLION in 2016 for an investigation into the government, but NO working phone?

DAMNED IF YOU DO, DAMNED IF YOU DON’T!
I have to waste 30 minutes of my day, but it is not my job. Nobody in St Maarten trust the police, the prosecutors etc. So they bring the info to me. The only thing I can do is what the law stipulates…hand everything over to the relevant authorities. They received OVER €20 MILLION euros in 2016 from Italy/America/Holland, YET THEY HAVE NO WORKING PHONE.
CHUPZ. This is how I make enemies, being forced to call people out. But I believe because the information is about Theo and Grisha KPSM is afraid. NOT MY PROBLEM. Dear Russell Voges, Holland, RST, TBO, Lands Recherche, KPSM, Prosecutors Office. Somebody is NOT Doing Their Job.

The police have a job, they investigate. I blog. Because people tend to trust me more that the police or Prosecutors, I am usually receiving info that should be handed over to the proper authorities like CFT, O.M., TBO, RST etc. No, I am not coming to Philipsburg to meet with anyone. YOU ARE BLOWING OVER 20 MILLION tax payer Euros, on an investigation. YOU DO NOT even have a working phone. So I have to take 20 minutes out of my life to address this??? This is NOT my job. No good feed goes unpunished in St Maarten, bit if I do not contact them. That is a crime. Now NOBODY can pretend like they don’t know.

1) I really resent doing this, and everytime I open my mouth I make enemies, but law enforcement in St Maarten is NOT doing their job.

2) I understand that it could be miscommunication, but how does Holland, The United States and Italy invest over €20 MILLION into a grand scale investigation with NO CONTACT NUMBER

3) I will not get into details, unless I have to.

4) I tried calling the Prosecutor’s Office yesterday and today … NO answer.

5) So I called KPSM yesterday. The strangest thing is KPSM calima that they don’t have TBO or RST contact info.

6) I called KPSM non emergencia LINE this morning, NO answer.

7) I called the 911 for help, she said not to call her because I REFUSED to give her any melee because she is not a supervisor.

8) I called TBO / RST hotline that they just Published, the number is dead.

9) I do not get paid for this… YOU DO. If people forward me relevant info to send to the proper aurhorities it is impossible. By law, we have to report this to the proper authorities

10) I called the Lands Recherche yesterday today. No answer

Now I am trying to reach Russell Voges of the CFT. Tell Russell, TBO, RST seriously to post the CORRECT contact information. I want no part of this Bobol. The ONLY reason I am trying to contact you people is to put you in contact with the source.

I am non profit, uninsured, no benefits or pension. By law, I have to at least try to contact you. I did. You can reach me at 721 527 6730 or 721 580 0514. Thank you

Racism In St Maarten Part 2. Madame Wants To Come To My Home…To Assault Me. I Have Tried To Reach Her Family To No Avail

I was told to file a report with the police, why? Jail cannot punish her the way she is punishing herself. I spoke to FAMILY, they gave up on her. She needs Turning Point.

Why did she come to my page with racist nonsense? I posted a Covid vaccine chart, when I posted the latest stats and evidently she is an anti vaxxer, so she came on my page to call me a nigger for posting Covid stats. I thought it was schizophrenia, it is not.

I will keep this short and sweet, because I KNOW WHAT I KNOW, I am trying to IGNORE her. However, everyone knows she needs Treatment. If she is your friend, get her help. She will call the wrong person Nigger. Trust me. The word doesn’t bother me. The fact that she believes that she can get away with it in St Maarten does.

She is a wannabe influencer, fresh out of jail, trying to gain traction and Attention, by randomly attacking me. I know this girl from a toddler. I don’t know what happened to her in Amsterdam.

I hear KPSM have a LOT of experience with her. Handle your business KPSM police. If she gets high and show up at my house….. like she threatened to. She lucky it only me she dealing with. Other Black folks reading this are not so forgiving.
