The oldest person to pin a ribbon this year is 110-year-old Mary Benjamin from Aruba. She seems to be the oldest knighted person ever, reports the Chapter of the Civil Orders. Benjamin was a “dedicated volunteer” with the Women’s League of the Methodist Church for 44 years. She has been appointed Member of the Order of Oranje-Nassau. Last year, 95-year-old Toos Wierema-Ballings from Eindhoven was probably the oldest recipient of an award. It is not entirely possible to say with certainty who the oldest recipient is. The award system has existed since 1815 and the age of the recipients has not always been kept up to date. At 35 years old, Marleen Mulders from Tilburg is the youngest person to receive a ribbon in 2021. She has been committed to children with cancer since 2002. Just like last year, 65 percent of those decorated are male. Almost all people who receive a ribbon receive it for their work as a volunteer (97 percent). In the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, eighty people receive a royal decoration. Eighteen persons have been appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. In total, the Netherlands has about a hundred official decorations, but orders of knighthood have a special position. The people who receive a ribbon have been nominated by citizens and social organizations. This year it concerned 3,117 proposals. As many as nine out of ten proposals have therefore been approved. Due to the corona measures, the ribbon shower has an adjusted character, just like last year. Mayors call the lucky ones on Monday. The awards are spread over the week. The names of all those decorated will appear in a special edition of the Government Gazette on Monday afternoon . Difference in awards Order of Orange-Nassau: The Order of Orange-Nassau has existed since April 4, 1892. For an award in this order are eligible persons who have made a special contribution to society. Think of volunteers who work for young people, the environment, (informal) care, sports, neighborhood associations or refugees. The Dutch Caribbean Police Force (KPCN), together with Police Netherlands and INTERPOL, took a new, major step in our international cooperation on 12 April 2021. The agreement ensures that the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, are now in direct contact with the headquarters in Lyon and police colleagues almost all over the world via the INTERPOL connections. This allows our KPCN police colleagues to consult and feed the INTERPOL databases themselves and to exchange information worldwide in a secure manner.

INTERPOL is a worldwide organization to which 194 member states are affiliated. Each Member State has a National Central Bureau (NCB). The NCBs maintain communication with the head office and the other NCBs and are the single point of contact for all enforcement services. In the Netherlands, this is NCB The Hague, which is set up at the National International Legal Aid Center (LIRC). A sub-NCB is now being opened for the first time in the Caribbean Netherlands. This sub-NCB falls under the responsibility of NCB The Hague.

The wish for a sub-NCB for the Caribbean Netherlands has existed for a long time at the KPCN. Deputy Chief of Police, Ronald Zwarter and Melvin Sint Jago as head of the information department within the KPCN, worked on the actual realization in coordination with INTERPOL NCB The Hague. “The Dutch Caribbean islands did not yet have a direct connection with the data from INTERPOL. This prevented us from conducting “direct searches for persons”, ”explains Melvin. “We were sometimes dependent on many external parties for our international information about criminals. By establishing our own sub-NCB, an intermediate link has been removed from this process, which of course promotes speed and thus improves international investigation. “

“With this INTERPOL connection, we can identify criminals, terrorists, and other unwanted persons or criminal groups more quickly and tackle them more effectively, making both the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and the European Netherlands even safer,” said Jose Rosales, Chief of Police of KPCN.

Specially trained intel colleagues from the Dutch Caribbean Police Force will set to work within the sub-NCB. They form the link between INTERPOL, NCB The Hague, and the enforcement services on the Dutch Caribbean islands of Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba. The ambition for the future is to extend the access with INTERPOL to the border posts of the Caribbean Netherlands so that the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee can also query incoming and outgoing travelers against the INTERPOL databases.

For American dollars they will. Some of the best people I know are Jamaicans, but the few scalliwags and JANKROS in St Maarten destroy the reputation of the Majority good Jamaicans. Anguilla locks down to visitors for two weeks, tourism director says

Anguilla is on a government-mandated 14-day lockdown, effective at midnight April 22, due to a surge in Covid-19 cases on the island, according to Shellya Rogers-Webster, deputy director of tourism.

The airport on Anguilla and ferry services connecting Anguilla with St. Maarten/Martin are closed to incoming travelers, although travelers already on Anguilla will be allowed to leave.

All people on Anguilla other than those providing essential services are required to stay home; public gatherings are prohibited; schools are closed, and restaurants and other food establishments are restricted to take-out services only.

Anguilla had 30 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of April 20.

Approximately 50% of the adult population have received either first or both doses of the vaccine. The island had just recently detailed its plan for allowing only visitors who are fully vaccinated, starting in July. 

Belmond Cap Juluca has informed its guests in residence and is contacting guests who had booked their stay during this two-week period. The luxury property said it is working closely with the Anguilla health authorities to ensure guests’ safety and that of the local community. 

“Belmond has a flexible booking policy in place and has advised any guests with existing bookings or booking enquiries to contact the central reservations office or their travel advisor to discuss options,” a spokesperson said
