PHILIPSBURG – The Law Enforcement Council is concerned about the shortcomings of youth crime prevention in Sint Maarten. The training of minors in the Miss Lalie Center juvenile detention center also requires attention. The Council stated this in a press release yesterday.
The Law Enforcement Council is pleased with the improvements in adult and juvenile rehabilitation in St. Maarten, but states that juvenile delinquency and youth rehabilitation are worrying topics.
According to the Council, the Miss Lalie Center youth rehabilitation center has not established a full-fledged education program for young people.
In addition, the Council is of the opinion that there is still no integrated policy focusing on the prevention of juvenile crime on the island.
According to the Board, this is the result of broader problems. Society on St. Maarten is becoming increasingly complex and problematic and requires an integrated approach.
The subject of youth would be a good example of this because it requires both an integrated and an inter-ministerial approach. “The judicial organizations involved do their best individually, but they always run into the high degree of dependence on the ministry, which means that the intended effect is not achieved,” said the Council.

Volgens Jacobs zal het traject voor de oprichting van COHO verdergaan zoals in dat in december afgesproken was. Sint-Maarten neemt weer deel aan de discussies met Curaçao, Aruba en Nederland over het juridische traject.
“De overheid zal blijven werken aan de nodige verbeteringen. Dat is ons doel. Wat het doel van Nederland is – dat weet ik niet. We zullen dat gedurende de gesprekken merken”, aldus Jacobs.
Komende vrijdag bespreekt de Rijksministerraad de liquiditeitssteun voor Sint-Maarten.
Residents of Cay Hill on Tuesday submitted a petition to Minister of VROMI Egbert Doran protesting a recent commercial development on Welgelegen Drive, on a lot designated for residential use only. The petition was also copied to Parliament and all other Ministers.
The residents said they are tired of complaining to government without any serious response, acknowledgement or action from government, more specifically the VROMI Ministry. They hope that the petition of signatures yields some results and a stop is put to the illegal operation.
“To our knowledge the lots in the outlined area/location has been pegged for residential use. However, the proprietor of this property has placed over twenty (20) forty foot containers on said lot and seemed to have commenced an illegal commercial operation of some sort from the location as of March 22, 2021,” the petition read.
“As a result, all residents have had to put up with an influx of noise, dangerously parked cars, unknown personnel and daily heavy equipment and container movement at various hours and on holidays. This raises our level of concern for the safety and security of our neighborhood in addition to how this sort of operation will affect the valuation of our properties. The double stacked 40 foot containers pose a serious hurricane hazard to the direct and surrounding area,” the petition read.
The residents are asking the Minister and by extension the government and Parliament for their urgent attention to this matter and look forward to a reply from the Minister soonest.

Male victim encountered with gun shots wound in his car in Dutch Quarter
On Tuesday evening March 20th approximately 06.50 pm, the dispatch center received several calls concerning a male victim who was found in a vehicle in Dutch Quarter suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower extremities. At the location the patrols encountered male victim sitting in his car who had sustained a gunshot wound. The victims was quickly stabilized on the scene by the paramedics and rushed to the Sint. Maarten Medical Center in critical condition. So far the police have no clear picture of what had taken place. The forensic department is still collecting evidence in this investigation. The vehicle in which the victim was encounters in was later confiscated for further investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes availed. KPSM and the Prosecutor’s Office request the assistance of the public of Sint Maarten in this ongoing investigation. J.D.W is suspected of inappropriate sexual behavior towards underaged children while in her care and while providing tutoring at her home. B.E.H.S. is also suspected of similar acts while these minors were in the care of J.D.W. Through this press release, we are requesting the community’s assistance to come forward and report possible wrongdoings by these two suspects. If your child, you, or someone you may know has been in contact with suspect J.D.W. or BE.H. S. in any way deemed inappropriate, we are asking you to contact the Youth and Morals Department to report it at +1721-5491117. Police made several arrests over the weekend in connection to criminal acts. Over the last few days, the police started to carry out checks in connection with closing time and other violations in the area of Simpson-Bay, Maho, Cole Bay, and surrounding areas. • During a control that took place on April 18, 2021, around 12.30 am, officers, observed two young men standing next to a scooter parked on Rhine road. Upon seeing the police officers the young men started to act very suspiciously and tried to slowly walk away from the scooter. It emerged that the scooter was probably stolen as it was missing several parts. The two were stopped and controlled by the officers. On one of the young men, the officers found a small amount of marijuana which immediately confiscated. A control was also carried out on the scooter that was parked. A handgun was found under the seat that was also confiscated. The two suspects with initials M.M.K. and R.R. respectively were arrested and transported to the police station in Philipsburg where they were held for questioning. • Central Dispatch directed several police patrols on April 18, 2021, around 2:30 am to a gas station in Simpson Bay for an assault case. The preliminary investigation shows that the man with the initials J.H had assaulted the pump attendant after he had refused him entrance to the gas station store. When approached by a police patrol, the individual threatened officers and smashed one of the store’s windows. Suspect J.H. who was allegedly under the influence of intoxicants resisted when police attempted to apprehend him. He was later transported to the Philipsburg police station where he is being held for questioning. Man arrested for ill-treating his partner An official complaint was made by a female victim against her boyfriend with the initials J.D. after an argument. After a short investigation, the officers became aware that the suspect ill-treated his partner. Officers arrested the male suspect at his job site on April 15, 2021. He was brought to the police station in Philipsburg where he was interrogated. Aruba looks towards long-idled oil refinery, as tourism drop pummels economy. A collapse in tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic has sent Aruba toward one of the world’s biggest economic contractions, prompting the island to try to diversify beyond its sun and sand image, namely by restarting a long-idled oil refinery. Assistance from the Netherlands helped the Caribbean island finance a stimulus program, blunting the impact of the economy’s 25.5% contraction on workers and businesses in 2020. That downturn was behind only Libya, Maldives and Venezuela, International Monetary Fund (IMF) data show. But those subsidies led to an increase in Aruba’s fiscal deficit to 17% of gross domestic product (GDP), according to the IMF, prompting some experts and residents to argue the island should diversify its economy to ensure the government can balance its budget without Dutch assistance. The 67% drop in tourism arrivals was devastating for small businesses like Aruba Bob Snorkeling, which used to run multiple tours a day before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “When COVID came around, they just came crashing down to once a day, once or twice a week, and then to nothing at all,” said instructor and part-owner Jesus Maduro, 30, while sipping coffee under the shade of solar panels in the company’s tree-filled backyard.
