ST MAARTEN FILES INTERIM INJUCTION AGAINST THE NEDERLANDS BECAUSE OF KNOPS’ ‘PLAN’

ST MAARTEN FILES INTERIM INJUCTION AGAINST THE NEDERLANDS BECAUSE OF KNOPS’ ‘PLAN’: On St. Maarten, the local organization Fundashon Pro Soualiga has brought preliminary relief proceedings against the Dutch State. They are against plans of State Secretary Raymond Knops (Kingdom Relations) who is asking for reforms on Curaçao, Aruba and St. Maarten in exchange for a loan.

One of the conditions is the creation of an entity that coordinates investments on the islands. The islands criticize the plans because they state that they have to give up part of their autonomy. On Curaçao, therefore, the unions demonstrated last week against Knops’ plans.

The organization that has instituted preliminary relief proceedings has even gone so far as to have the Kingdom Statute of the early 1950s declared invalid. That would not be in accordance with the right to self-determination of former colonies, as stated by the United Nations in 1955. The lawsuit is scheduled for September 25.

The islands desperately need the loan because they have been hit hard financially by the corona crisis.
