Nature Foundation Reminds Residents and Visitors to Take Care During Sea Turtle Nesting Season.

The Nature Foundation Sint Maarten encourages residents and visitors to protect adult sea turtles and their eggs by limiting lighting and disturbances along the shore, and reporting sea turtle activity to the Foundation. With the start of the annual sea turtle nesting season, three endangered sea turtle species are expected to lay their nests on many of Sint Maarten’s beaches from April until November and sometimes even as late as in December. The Nature Foundation is the designated authority to manage and research the sea turtle population and other protected species, appointed by the VROMI minister.

St. Maarten has permanent and nesting populations of green (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles that have been reported to nest on the island. While sea turtles may nest on all beaches on St. Maarten, the beaches with the most reported nesting activity are Gibbs Bay, Simpson Bay, Mullet Bay, Guana Bay and Dawn beach.

Sea turtles often nest at night, laying up to 100-200 eggs, and sometimes return to do so multiple times over a period of a couple weeks. After approximately two months, the hatchlings will emerge and crawl to the ocean. However, all three sea turtle species are endangered species, and only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. For these reasons, precautions should be taken during the nesting season to ensure successful hatchings.

“Sea turtles play an important environmental and economic role for our island meanwhile; they face many threats to their survival due to pollution, overdevelopment of their nesting beaches, and direct human impact. It is essential that our visitors and residents take part in the role of protecting these creatures so that they continue to live in our waters and nest on our beaches,” explained Leslie Hickerson, Nature Foundation Educational Outreach Officer.

Sea turtles require a specific beach habitat to be able to nest. Lighting and activity on the beaches at night decrease nesting success because females avoid laying their eggs on bright, busy beaches. In addition, hatchlings become disoriented and travel towards artificial lights instead of the reflecting moonlight on the ocean. The Nature Foundation recommends that beachfront homes and businesses place a cap on lights or replace conventional lights with red lights to avoid these issues.

Further, if you encounter a sea turtle, nest, or hatchlings, it is recommended to remain at least 15 meters away since it is prohibited to disturb, harm, or kill sea turtles. Do not allow your dogs to dig around the nest, and never operate vehicles on the beach sand. This could damage sea turtle nests and minimizing nesting success. Last year, six sea turtles were also reported injured or killed due to boat strikes. Boat captains should drive responsibly in the lagoon and bay areas, traveling at no faster than 5 knots to avoid collisions and keep watch at all times.

The Nature Foundation is currently collecting nesting data to compare it to previous surveys. This research allows us to evaluate the nesting seasons’ historical success and determine human activity’s impact over the years. Individuals can participate by volunteering to patrol beaches late at night or early in the morning. Please contact us if you find sea turtle tracks or an apparent nest. The Nature Foundation also encourages St. Maarten residents to spread awareness by checking in weekly to “Turtle Thursdays,” a series of educational programming posted on our social media accounts for all ages.

Congratulations to Jorien Wuite – making history for SXM in the Second Chamber!!! 🇸🇽

Besides Jorien Wuite, who has served as Secretary General for two Ministries on St. Maarten and as Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague during the previous government, we are happy to see other persons of Dutch Caribbean descent enhance the diversity now reflected in the election of new parties such as BIJ1, which has representation from St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba in the persons of Quinsy Gario and Lysanne Charles. At a time when representation is so important, it is heartwarming to see that persons with an understanding from personal experience of living and working in St. Maarten will be able to stand for us in the second chamber debates.

MP Sarah Wescot Williams Has Been Up All Night ‘Thinking’. Dutch Sint Maarten Politics…

Thought for the day:
What is the current NA/UP governing coalition’s stance on our political status? Do they even have a stance?
Let’s break it down in a few simple choices.

A
Renegotiate the Kingdom charter to become:
-a commonwealth of independent partners?
-an in-between of the current status and a commonwealth (that only they can explain)?

B
Step out of the Kingdom charter and become an independent nation?

C
Seek Netherlands’ status for the St. Maarten citizens with all the rights and obligations, a la BES?

Note: the coalition’s stance appears to be A, B and C.
“Even in politics, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

P.S
D
Status Quo.

MP Wescot wants urgent meeting of the Decolonization Committee of Parliament.

“The route to the UN via the CLG petition is a way to circumvent the route to the people of St. Maarten for their opinion.”

MP Sarah Wescot is of the opinion that the longer the government pussyfoots around the division in the coalition on the topic of the UN petition, the more detrimental it gets.
MP Wescot elaborates: “By now, the Prime Minister should have received the Kingdom Council of State’s advice on the draft COHO kingdom law and while this advice should be treated with confidentiality, I highly doubt that the St. Maarten government and its coalition MPs in parliament will not discuss this advice ahead of the Kingdom government drafting its reaction to the Council of State’s advice. But even if this advice from the Council of State gives the Caribbean countries some latitude, the ball will remain in the court of the Kingdom government and thus in the court of the Netherlands.”

“The government of St. Maarten has to address the path chosen by a majority in parliament to confront the Netherlands at this crucial time in the negotiations. Not only that, but the entire country is being dragged into a confrontation we did not ask for”, the MP continued.
The Prime Minister of St. Maarten skillfully dodged the issue of the divide between a majority in parliament and the government, as it relates to the agreement with the Netherlands and the demand by State Secretary Knops to receive reconfirmation of the government and parliament for the agreed upon country package and the COHO entity, whether the COHO law is adjusted or not.

To appease some, the government of St. Maarten has jumped on the decolonization bandwagon and claims it only recently came to realize that our current autonomy is flawed.
MP Wescot disagrees: “This “autonomy” is what we/they opted for in 1954 and with that the Dutch Kingdom skillfully put article 73 behind it, scepticism notwithstanding. We (St. Maarten) reaffirmed that status in 2000, using our right to self-determination.”

“What has transpired now is that a majority in parliament feels that the charter clauses such as the office of governor, redress by the Kingdom government , (deficit) Kingdom government, international loan approval, etc.etc can be rectified or eliminated if we shame the Kingdom and claim we are still treated as a colony, because they argue, ‘ self-government is “boss in own house” and that we are not’. The proponents of this decolonization drive thus argue that they want to be in the Charter, but not bound by (all of) the rules.”
MP Wescot presumes: “except maybe for the 3 kingdom affairs of Nationality, Foreign Affairs and Defense. Is that not independence or at least a new political status?, the MP further questions.

MP Wescot made her call for a referendum clear by stating, “what I conclude is that the route to the UN via the CLG petition is a way to circumvent the route to the people of St. Maarten for their opinion on this status change, because that is what it is.”

“From some statements it appears, the decolonization advocates lean towards a more BES-like status and equality for our citizens, and sometimes it appears they want nothing to do with the Dutch Kingdom, but hold on to the Dutch passport.”
“It’s either we are renegotiating the charter or we are renegotiating our status as a country outside of the Dutch charter. In none of these scenarios, is renewing decolonization a wise move and on top of all of that, it is very bad timing, the MP concluded.

Editor’s analysis: Pisas has a hell of a job ahead of him in Curacao

“Curaçao is changing course,” this newspaper headlined on Saturday, the day after the elections. The consequence of the election of the electorate. It is to be hoped that the new course set by the new coalition government will also benefit the country and the population. It will be a hell of a job, winner Gilmar “Pik” Pisas said immediately after it was clear that his party MFK has been given the mandate to determine the direction. The question is how much space he has to change the sailing route. “The people need help,” he said a few hours after the ballot boxes were closed, with not one eye but with both eyes towards the Netherlands. It shows a sense of reality, because Curaçao is in bad shape in connection with the corona crisis and can certainly not handle it at the moment – entirely on its own. That’s no shame, because that applies to almost all Caribbean islands, including Aruba and Sint Maarten, and many other, larger nations. Still, Pisas says it now, with the winnings in his pocket, louder and clearer than before the ballot box. With his anti-Coho campaign, he, but also the other winners – PNP (from Larmonie-Cecilia), TPK (Calmes) and KEM (Martines) – aroused the impression among the masses that there are alternative possibilities . Unless there is a lot more and drastic cuts and cutbacks in their own country, the last thing Pisas wants to do, every new government is forced to ask for Dutch help. Local financing or financing on the international capital market is not a solution. In The Hague, however, all parties agree that depositing money in a bottomless pit is pointless. Hence the hard condition of reforms. Something that the IMF also states. Reform (= change = adaptation), however, is not popular. And all things considered, the election result is a conservative choice. It is true that new, different parties will soon be in charge, but they radiate little willingness to change. When it comes to “reforms” – especially if they come or are imposed from outside – then rather not. Prefer to leave everything with the old and known. This also applies, for example, to the progressiveness in the field of recognition of same-sex marriage / partnership. It has to do with protectionism and thus preservation of the known and proper versus the unknown and (possibly) threatening from outside. Isolationism vs Globalism. In a way you can understand this; international developments take place at a rapid pace and small, open economies often feel vulnerable to this. Especially in times of crisis. And Curaçao has suffered a lot from this: the silent death of the offshore (international financial services); the looming end of the oil age; the collapse of neighboring Venezuela with dire consequences for refinery, trade and free zone; the Covid-19 pandemic and the blow it dealt with tourism – the only remaining sector. After so much setback, coupled with loss of jobs and income, the tendency quickly develops to crawl into one’s own shell and seek protection from the old and the familiar. That is not unique to Curaçao, but it is alive and well here. Protecting yourself, blocking external influences and especially leaving everything as it is – with regard to the capital and labor market, to name just two tricky themes – can feel safe for the short term, but is a recipe for the longer term. for deterioration and even loss. Education must keep up with the times and international trends, including digitization. The civil service can no longer operate bureaucratic, too unwieldy and expensive and with insufficient output. Business must be given the space to invest and produce in order to earn the money and create the jobs it needs. Closing things off to international movements is therefore not an option. On the contrary, the doors of Curaçao must be wide open. For residents to develop into citizens of the world and for foreigners to contribute to innovation, growth and well-being. With his statement “the people need help”, the MFK leader shows that he is aware of the needs of the little man, but also that his country must receive this help from outside. He may be able to take the sharp edges off a bit here and there, but as previously the now outgoing cabinet Rhuggenaath agreed and also the Wever-Croes cabinet of Aruba and the cabinet Jacobs of Sint Maarten. sooner or later, a newly formed Pisas cabinet will also have to agree to Coho or Coho-like conditions for further liquidity support. Preferably early, so as not to waste any unnecessary time eidskas, after last year’s financial aid of 860 million (including 170 million, with which the Giro bank account holders finally have access to their credit) is now quickly seeing the bottom again. Without that large-scale contribution – the food packages for tens of thousands, medical assistance (including all corona vaccinations) as well as extra efforts in the field of justice, coastguard and defense – many would have been much worse off; in the civil service, in companies and also households.
It is up to Pisas and his team to be formed, including the new States taking office on May 11, to show that they mean business. Prime Minister Pisas, who as an opposition leader in parliament was only recently criticized by the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom (RMR) for not respecting basic democratic rules, will have to convince the new Dutch Rutte (IV) government. If he wants to achieve something on and for Curaçao and he wants to do that on the basis of cooperation, then concessions will have to be made. It could possibly become even more difficult for the new combination in Fòrti, because The Hague has also listened to the views of MFK and PNP and has probably also learned something from the past. The lesson will be: what needs to be done will not come about without compelling help. Not yet another “Growth Agreement”. And even the construction with the stricter Landspakket has not (really) got off the ground yet. The combination of money / conditions – possibly even reversed: first meet conditions, then money (because in fact very few of the agreed conditions have been fulfilled, while some billion have been transferred in the meantime) will continue to exist. As indicated, support for a change of course in the Netherlands will be limited. In addition, what is changed automatically affects Aruba and – almost everyone in political The Hague has had it with – Sint Maarten. The inward-looking attitude quickly leads to doing it yourself; they don’t want help, they don’t really want to cooperate, but they do want money. Everything indicates that that is not going to be him. In the meantime, the island is rapidly entering a second / third wave of corona infections and may inevitably approach a near-complete lockdown. Another setback for tourism / economy and (government) finances, due to strongly lagging tax revenues. Again pressure on the hospital, on the facilities, on the depleted reserves. The winners of the Curaçao Parliament elections 2021 count themselves rich, that is for a while, enjoy the victory, but the reality will hit hard. It is to be hoped that the new political leader will be able to deal with that. Antillians Dagblad

CHRIS VAN DAM CDA WHO TARGETTED KPSM POLICE AND THE POINT BLANCH PRISON VOTED OUT. SO VAN DAM, BOSMAN & VAN RAAK GONE!

The Hague Chris van Dam, who in recent years was spokesman Kingdom Relations for the CDA, has not received sufficient preferential votes to continue his membership of the House of Representatives despite the support of party leaders.

Van Dam said in a tweet today that he has collected 10,000 votes while he needs 17,000. The CDA former public prosecutor focused his attention mainly on law enforcement in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, showing special interest in the degrading situation in the Point Blanche prison on Sint Maarten.

After the ineligible André Bosman (VVD) and Ronald van Raak (SP), Van Dam is the third member to lose the Parliamentary Committee for Kingdom Relations. That number can rise even further, because also for Nevin Özütok (GroenLinks) and Stieneke van der Graaf (Christian Union) prolongation of parliamentary membership is highly uncertain.
