Taskforce formed to combat School Fights

The Sint Maarten Police Force in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor’s Office came together on Monday 30th September 2019, to form a Task force aimed at bringing stakeholders together to collectively reduce the number of schools fights among our Sint Maarten youth.

It seemed imperative that we remind the community of a previously released plea for peace among our youth.

The task force consists of individuals of the Police Management Team, the Public Prosecutor’s office, community police officers and the Juvenile department.

Some objectives of the taskforce will be:
1. First and foremost to inform and educate the parents and public of their role/ responsibilities when it comes to the school fights;
2. Result-oriented visits with schools.
3. To meet with governmental intuitions about this topic to stimulate a multidisciplinary, but also preventative approach with positively empowered youth as the outcome.

We are well aware of the increase in the number of school fights that have been taking place within this school year and would like to send a stern warning to all students and parents that there will be severe consequences for such actions.

The KPSM police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to school and gang fights and are pleading with all parents in the community to get involved in trying to alleviate this rapidly growing problem by talking to their children about the dangers of getting involved in fights.

Penalties vary from community service to jail time. Police officers are trying to avoid getting into any hostile situations with minors, however they will not shy away in the event it becomes necessary to do so, if it’s in the best interest of public order and safety.

Violence is never the answer and the Sint Maarten police force hopes that we all can come together as a community and put a stop to this unnecessary violence within our community.

Video Today’s Government Press Briefing

[wpvideo Hfo1SmVm]

Today’s press briefing as the St Government remains in turmoil. There have been mass resignations in protest of what many feel is to short a time period to call new elections.

Many feel that it is another set up to put the same crooks back into their positions because there is no time for new parties to be allowed to register.

It is going to be another sham elections, where old the same crooks will be recycled. Frans Richardson, who just got out of prison, AGAIN – has turned the leadership reins over to Rolando Brison which means NOTHING.

Frans and the gang are simply trying to avoid questions about their leader’s next court date, Frans is very much their leader still.

Although Sarah has been everywhere shading the new coalition, she seems to be the only person representing the UDP.

This is the time when Theo, Frankie and the gang are out rallying and lacing palms with cash.

MP Rolando Brison to head USP’s list

Faction leader of the United St. Maarten (US) party MP Rolando Brison will head USP’s list in the #1 position for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections. Brison contested the last Parliamentary elections in the #4 slot on the USP under the leadership of MP Frans Richardson. MP Richardson, with the support of his party’s board, made the announcement on Tuesday night during a meeting with USP candidates who will also be contesting the elections.

The move is in keeping with the USP’s principle position of giving young adults an opportunity to not just find a political home within the party, but to afford them the opportunities to take on significant roles when possible. Since its inception just five years ago, USP has consistently included younger persons on its list of candidates.

“We are still a new, young party. I have always believed that you have to give young, dynamic people the opportunity to show that they can indeed lead the country one day. We cannot and should not stand in the way of this natural development. Our party is very proud of our history of inclusion of young adults. We are not afraid of that commitment, we are dedicated to it,” MP Richardson said.

He said that St. Maarten, not just USP, has a dynamic future leader in MP Brison. “From his days at the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau, to his initiatives and actions on the floor of Parliament, he has shown that he has what it takes. He prepares well, he studies, conducts detail research, he is a people’s person and he is not afraid of challenges. The board and I are confident he will do great by our people,” MP Richardson said.

For his part, MP Brison said the confidence being placed in him is extremely humbling. He said the USP is a very close knit group of people, a family, who has embraced him and his approaches and has given him multiple opportunities to grow within the party and, by extension, in politics on St. Maarten. He credited MP Richardson for always willing to mentor him as well as having the confidence to name him faction leader of the party in Parliament.

“It’s truly an honor to have received the confidence of the board of USP and MP Richardson to head our list in the upcoming elections. It once again proves that USP is the party that nurtures the next generation of political leaders. I’m grateful that my hard work has no gone unnoticed by both USP and the public and hope that the country joins me and my USP colleague candidates in reshaping the next generation of leadership in St. Maarten,” MP Brison said.

Regarding the upcoming Parliamentary snap-elections, Brison said: “whenever elections are held, Team USP will be ready!”

St Maarten Cruise Port Planning Improvements

Port St Maarten is planning a series of improvement projects, officials announced this week.

The new investments are part of a “primary focus of getting additional business in 2020 and beyond,” according to a statement.

Over the next 24 months, the port will be financing construction of several new projects, including a replica historical ship in the main cruise area; a small replica of the island’s famous salt pond; a new heritage wall and more green spaces.

This is to further enhance the guest passenger experience at the port since the cruise terminal is the last place they encounter before boarding their vessel,” the port said in a statement.

Port St Maarten is also planning to build a new permanent homeporting terminal for so-called “fly-and-cruise” passengers who fly to St Maarten to cruise around the region.

“Homeporting is very important for the local economy as it generates more airlifts in and out of the destination; brings additional business for local service providers; and creates the potential for pre- and post- cruise extension visits,” the port said.

The changes are along with a series of infrastructure projects rannging from repairs to the inter-island berth to the RoRo pier.

“Despite facing competitors, emerging new markets in addition to changes in travel trends of cruisers, destination St. Maarten still has the highest guest satisfaction rates which in the end is still the single most important business driver for the island,’ officials said.

Over the long term, Port St Maarten officials said the port would issue a request for proposal to attract a strategic partner, as many ports around the region have done.

“Such a partnership would bring additional strategic expertise and capital leading to mutual benefits for the port and the country overall,” officials said. “Port St. Maarten is looking at quality rather than quantity based on on-going shifts in cruise trends and developments. The port will continue to be proactive in making sure that there isn’t anything that would diminish the guest experience. Sustainable tourism and how ships and ports should adapt for a greener future, preparing for the cruise terminal of the future is the buzz in the industry and fits into the investment plans of the port.”

MINISTER JOHNSON ATTENDS MONACO YACHT SHOW 2019

Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication the Honorable Stuart Johnson wrapped up his Europe work visit by attending the Monaco Yacht Show 2019 last week.

This year’s event has been hailed by the organizers and attendees alike as the largest mega-yacht show and has fittingly received significant attention from Marine Industry service providers around the globe. Johnson was the invited as the “Chief Guest” for the event, and participated in a roundtable discussion at the ACREW IMM Crew Lounge with several Mega Yacht Captains, other stakeholders in the Yachting Industry, Port de Plaisance St. Maarten’s Yacht Club representative Jesse Peterson and the media personnel from around the globe during the event.
The goal was to provide updates on developments in the local front as St. Maarten continues to be a destination of great interest for the global yachting industry. “It is important that updates on St. Maarten’s progress post-Irma are positive. It must be spread whenever and where ever we have the opportunity as this allows to attract future yachts,” said Johnson.
Johnson said he would “continues to embrace and support the Marine Sector on St. Maarten as it contributes significantly to our economy.”

During the roundtable discussion, Johnson highlighted the Triton Update Online, spoke about current affairs and gave a synopsis of the past six months of activities on the island where the Yachting Industry is concerned.

Part of the discussion focused on updating the Crew Members and Captains on what they can expect in terms of improvements since St. Maarten was devastated in September 2017 by Hurricane Irma and Maria.

Johnson also had “a frank discussion” with the attendees during which he explained that the Simpson Bay Bridge has already exceeded its lifespan and will need to be replaced. He said, “Part of the vision for the industry includes widening the channel and making the entryway deeper to accommodate the larger vessels as more mega yachts have shown interest in coming to our destination.” He also mentioned the new Marinas and those that have come back online since suffering damage in 2017.

“We stressed the importance of having all businesses and Marinas fully operational. However, we made it clear that based on our experience with hurricane Irma and Maria in 2017, new developments must be sustainable,” said Johnson.

Some feedback he received from Captains included concerns about the Immigration issue of the past with regards to clearance of crew members. He informed the Yacht Operators of the Immigration Department’s efforts to improve clearing times. He also more work will be done to improve on efficiency, especially where it relates to the B1/B2 Visa requirements and other issues that were challenges in the past. Johnson explained that some problems, such as those pertaining to Cruising Permits, should be resolved. He also said the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau would continue working on improving the visitor experience for the Yachting industry.

Consideration is being given to beautification projects for Simpson Bay. Adding walking trails through the Cole Bay area and creating other hiking trails and bike ride excursions, and increased hotel services, are also some requests made during the discussion. Johnson intends to work with his colleague Minister of Justice on addressing the concern over the Simpson Bay Police dock being closed from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, which was a point of interest for the Captains.

The Ministry of TEATT will be carrying out an impact study to determine how far and wide the financial benefits of the Yachting Industry reach. At the same time, the Ministry will, through the TEATT at Work awareness television program, inform the community at large about opportunities within the Yachting Industry.
“More attention will be put on “All about SXM” donations which PDP launched after the hurricanes of 2017. The work BWA has done assisting the community over the past four years, and the recycling effort of TRITON will also be highlighted.
During his trip, Johnson also met with tourism officials in Cannes, France and Monaco. He was featured in a video message on progress in St. Maarten post-Irma and Maria, which was launched by the Cannes tourism office.
“St. Maarten has a great opportunity to expand its Marine Sector. And through the Memorandum of Understanding with our counterparts on the Northern Side of the Island, we can create greater links with France to increase of Yacht arrivals from that region,” said Johnson. He has held an initial discussion with Vice President of the Collectivity Valerie Damasseau and intends to continue these discussions within short to determine a way forward.
“To attract tourist we have to go out, and foster relationships along with marketing efforts will stimulate tourist movements to our island,” Johnson concluded.
